    Good day All,

Just adding some doc on Chassis 27243 that was sold today on auction for $47500 CAN + 11% Auction Premium ($52725 CAN / $38970 USD).

    https://www.icollector.com/item.aspx?i=51729831

Although the front seats and steeriing wheel are incorrect, etc the details indicate that the car had a bare metal repaint and an engine rebuild. If so, then a very good price all things considered if one considers the cost of these two items.

    Cheers,

    Sam

    Good day All,

Well... it did not take long, but chassis 27243 looks to have been purchased by a dealer in a close suburb to me, Sherwood Park with a now ask of $89980 CAN ($66284 USD)... The car was purchased 10 days ago for $52K CAD:

    https://www.sherwoodmotorcars.com/inventory/used-1979-ferrari-400-pininfarina-nut-bolt-restoration-rebuilt-v12-engine-extensive-documentation-rwd-27243000000000000/

What I find amusing is that this dealer is claiming a nut and bolt restoration when in fact they do not really know if this is the case, as they were not the ones that did the resto. I guess "nut and bolt restoration" means different things to different people.

    Cheers,

    Sam

    Good day Steve,

A friend of mine was going to take a look at the car (curiosity sake, not to buy), as it is relatively local. If he does, I will report back on what he finds and says, as he is quite mechanically knowledgeable.

The car was sold by the previous owner (estate sale) at relatively local auction. Apparently, the car was certainly known in the area and was used by the owner for various events. Consequently, it came from a long time owner. The dealership now offering the car probably figured out that the market is far greater in the US than these parts. and so perhaps this prompted the decision to offer it at the Mecum auction? Additionally the local market for specialty cars is somewhat soft and making things even tougher is that there are very few shops that really know how to service carbs, let alone 6 webers. In my city there are maybe 1 or 2 shops and perhaps the same in the other larger City... which would make any local buyer a bit nervous from a serviceability perspective. All in all I am not surprised at the decision to offer the car down South.

The things that could hurt its value are the various modifications done... seats, some electrical changes, monster stereo/amps, etc. These days most people value originality more than custom or tailored modifications. That is not to say that custom/modified are bad, but that changes are personal and so one has to find a buyer that is similar, otherwise the cost to return back to stock can be costly. Used factory seats should be not an issue to find, but could be costly + may require some leather work (to match the rest of the interior) which will add to the resto cost. The other changes could be minor or not to remove/restore. That said, these type of items could very well intimidate potential buyers and thus affect its sale price. I guess we will know soon enough, as this car's mecum auction is no reserve and so the car will sell.

    Cheers,

    Sam

Sam: Thank you very much for your response--its really helpful. If your friend looks at the car any additional comments or perspective they get would be most welcome. My mother lives in Indianapolis, and I visit her often, and might make a trip out that weekend for the auction if the car is in good condition. While I generally avoid auctions, the provenance on this car is intriguing, if it was well maintained with service records from the longtime owner. I will admit to being intimidated by the 6 carb set up on the engine, but the specialist shop I've talked to is familiar with these engines and confident it can be managed.
    Thanks for your quick response!
    Best regards,
    Steve

    Good day All,

According to the Mecum site the selling price was $41800 USD... perhaps this included the auction fees?

Interestingly, the car sold a few weeks ago for around $52K CAN. Comparing this to today's selling price of $41800 USD works out to be about $56900 CAN and so this dealer broke even at best and perhaps even lost some $ given the time/effort/transport cost to Mecum.

    Cheers,

    Sam

What are everyone’s thoughts about the sound system in this car? Obviously age not withstanding since those components in the trunk look very old, the 8 speaker system is quite robust if not overkill. What is quite intriguing are the two rear speakers in what were the rear ‘cubby’ storage areas. As I’m in the process of light restoration of my 400 I’ve considered doing the same, and I figured I wasn’t the first to consider doing so. (I personally would not cut holes in the doors or rear AC vent trim pieces for tweeters). 2 front speakers alone are really not enough - I was going to simply add rear parcel shelf speakers so as not to disrupt the original upholstery or ‘look’.
Would love to hears some suggestions and opinions.
    Cheers

Otto has a very nice setup in his car. This was my inspiration for my own car: bury a small size sub-woofer in the trunk with a proper enclosure that replicates the second AC. As for the amplifiers, some period correct amplifier are easy to source (and super easy to repair).

On this particular car the positioning of the components are a bit too intrusive. It would have been easy to install them under the shelf, next to the AC. Same story for the rear speakers. These could have been relocated under the shelf.

All in all some decent sound in these cars is nice, but a more subtle approach is possible.

my thoughts exactly. Although that rear cubby is the ideal spot for rear speakers, the rear parcel shelf is easier to access, and again keeps the overall integrity of the aesthetics of the car

Looking back to the picture, the stereo is not period corrected, but really sought after. Also the integration in the dashboard is nicely done.

Unfortunately, this car is a bit too much of everything : modern seats, sport steering wheels, shiny BBS, big stereo... The seller should have advertised this car with its stock wheels (which he had by the way).

The buyer had a sweet deal on that one. With all the saving he can buy two pair of brand new TRX...
