Fuel pump runs any time the relay or fuse are installed. Regardless of key position. Relay pole 35 is powered from fuse. Activates either 86 or 87 not sure, and turns pump on. Any thoughts? Cappo Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Does that also include the "off" position? What version 1980 308-2Vi? Euro or US? Are you saying that the fuel pump will run: 1) with the fuel pump relay installed and the fuel pump fuse removed, and will also run: 2) with the fuel pump relay removed and the fuel pump fuse installed?
US 2 Vi Fuel pump will run in any key position until battery dies. No head lights but turn signal work with key off. Stereo on as well. This all started when the car quit while driving. Pulled fuel pump relay and took a similar one from the relay holder. Car restarted and ran fine until I discovered these new electrical issues. Never had any electrical issues until this. Very unusual as a 308-2Vi is hardwired (no PCB to have traces get shorted together), nor can I see a strong relationship between fuel pump mis-operation and headlight mis-operation, but I don't know if by "no headlights" you mean: A) the headlights don't work at all (a problem), or B) the headlights are not wrongly "on" like the fuel pump (not a problem). First, can you confirm: 1. Your fuel pump relay is a ...113 type (terminal 30, terminal 85, terminal 86, and two terminals 87)? 2. Your relay for start injector (called the start valve relay on the 186/80 OM schematic) is the ...101 type (terminal 30, terminal 85, terminal 86, terminal 87, and terminal 87a)? Do you have a voltmeter? My first suspicion (for the fuel pump mis-operation) would be the ignition switch itself. To rule it in, or out: 1. With key "off" (or not even present), measure the voltage from the top of fuse #2 (fuse B on the schematic) to ground = should be 0V. The light blue (A) wire connected to the top of fuse #2 comes from terminal 15 of the ignition switch and should only be +12V when the key is in the "on" position (Pos II) or "start" position (Pos III). 2. The start injector relay controls the fuel pump relay. Unplug the ...101 start injector relay and measure the voltage from the 87 female terminal in the relay socket (this is the bottommost horizontal terminal -- there are also small terminal numbers on the relay itself so you can double-check) to ground. This 87 female terminal should have a white-black (BN) wire attached to it. This wire should be +12V only when the key is in the "start" position (Pos III). If both these wires measure +12V with the key "off" = that would explain the fuel pump running, and would be a bad sign for the ignition switch IMO.
Have to correct myself for test 2 as, if the BN wire was at +12V, the starter solenoid would be activated, too (and the starter motor running). Is the blue safety switch on you airflow metering device unplugged?
Steve Many thanks Right on- Ign. Switch malfunction, replaced switch and all is in perfect working order Thanks Again Cappo Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Very good - thanks for the feedback. It seemed to be an ignition switch related malfunction since much of what you reported (like the turn signals working in addition to the fuel pump running) are things that should only work with the key "on". Can only surmise that the flaw also put enough voltage onto the terminal 50 of Pos III to close the fuel pump relay via the start injector relay, but not enough voltage to actuate the starter solenoid.
