A friend wants to list his 1980 corvette on ebay, but first we have this nagging little problem. The car runs terribly rich at idle and will foul out plugs in a very short time. The choke light on the dash shows "on" at idle but when the car is driven, during acceleration the light momentarily goes off. As soon as your foot is off throttle the light is on again. We have tried to loosen the outer cover of the choke housing and slightly rotated it in both directions but no difference was made. Also the secondaries will not open up at all. We've tried cleaning everything in and out. Disconnecting the choke wire of course makes the light go out, but the car continues to run the same. Does this sound more like a stuck float or something? Not sure why the secondaries wont open except for some kind of linkage at the choke preventing it.

Any advice or tips are greatly appreciated.

I've got an 81 with a roughly simliar problem. So much so that the car has been in the back of the garage for 5 years!

As such I don't have any direct info for you but a few suggestions.

On the 81 it does have some computer controlled functions that at times need to be reset. I would assume that the 80 does as well and in that case you'd need to get the diagnosing equipment or bring it to a place that can reset the codes.

Not sure off the top of my head right now, but the secondaries are vaccum opperated right?? So if the secondaries wont open there could be a vaccum leak or blockage in the line.

In most of these cars, the secondaries are locked out with the choke on. There is also a vacuum choke "pull-off" which will disable the choke under heavy throttle (but possibly not enough to allow the secondaries to engage).

I would disable the choke by pulling the wire AND temporarily wiring the choke (and choke linkage) wide open.... and see if that gives you secondaries.

These "electric carbs" represented a real problem for manufacturers as emissions regs tightened. Hopefully you will discover it's simply mis-adjusted.
