    Seems to be some debate on this. Servicing a car with a terribly refinished intake in red and by the quality of the job I thought I would find black underneath but after stripping it appears red with no sign of the black.
    Customer wants it original so do we go with the black or red. So far my research shows this should be a black intake until the QV engine. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login

    1981 and 1982 2Vi engines came from the factory as black.

    Earlier 1980's were bare unpainted silver.

    QV's were red.

    My 1981GTSi was unpainted, or so I thought. I removed the plenum for access to a coolant leak and found that most of the bottom side was still black (the paint on the top had fallen off or been removed for some reason).
