My 1982 308 GTSi (USA Model) will not start.
But when I'm able to get it started it runs great.

Before you blast me for not using the search function, I did.
I've read a ton of threads but I'm still at a loss.
I'm not a great diagnostician nor a great mechanic.
    So please constructively help.

Here's what I've done so far:
    1) I checked the fuse for the fuel pump. It's good. (BTW, the fuse blocks have been upgraded to the units sold by Cowboy Motors, LLC)
    2) Confirmed that both relay "H" (Relay for Fuel Pump) and relay "P" (Relay for start injector) both trigger when the key is turned but not started. However, the fuel pump does NOT turn on.
    3) With the key on but not started, I pulled the plug on the "airflow sensor safety switch". Again, the fuel pump does not come on.
    4) I put a jumper on the connector for the "airflow sensor safety switch" wire. The fuel pump does not come on.

Last night when I was doing all of this, I disconnected the "airflow sensor safety switch" and turned the key. She fired up immediately. I let her run for a while, shut her off, then tried to restart her......Nothing!

I got the most information from this thread:
    https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/82-308-gtsi-fuel-pump-runs-when-key-turned-to-position-2.448599/

So I'm guessing that the "airflow sensor safety switch" is bad or intermittently failing.

Is what I have circled the entire "airflow sensor safety switch"?

If so does anyone have a part number?

Is there anything else I should check?

If the car is hot or cold makes no difference.

    Thanks in advance!!

Try putting a different ..101 relay in the relay P position (even though relay P actuates, that does not confirm the contacts inside are good/working).

The fuel pump MUST run when the key is "on" and the safety switch is unplugged.

Ok I'll "borrow" a relay from the headlight position.
    Will advise.
    Thanks

The same applies to the fuel pump relay. If a different ...101 relay P doesn't help, also try another ...113 relay in the fuel pump relay position -- any relay can become electrically intermittent/flaky (even though it seems to physically actuate.)

    You nailed it!!!!
Swapped the same relay from the one of the headlight motors into position "P".
Tapped the key and she fired right up!
    Thank you!!!

What pisses me off a little is that I paid my mechanic to figure out why this was happening and he charged me $350 for his time and a relay for position "H", and the problem was back a couple days later.

    Follow up question......
Except for the one my mechanic replaced all the relays look original.
Would you recommend replacing them all with modern units?

I'm hoping there is a chart somewhere in the forum that shows me the Bosch numbers for modern relays.
My mechanic put a Bosch 0 986 AH0 251 in position "H" so I'm assuming that is a modern replacement for the "113" relay.

Yes, that is a proper Bosch replacement for a Bosch...113 relay. Bosch 0332019151 and Tyco V23234-C0001-X006 would be other equivalents. These are not "exotic" relays, and many other brands make them. They're only starting to get more rare because the form factor (being so large) is now getting rather obsolete.

Not so much IMO. Your H and P are the only ones involved in running the engine, and, as you just did, you're already carrying some "spares" with you in other function. If you have engine starting/running trouble, you can always steal a relay from something else to get home and then get a replacement for the bad one. The horn relay is a good one to steal for the H relay position. Or you could always just carry a spare ...113 and a spare ...101 with you. The important thing is to know how to unplug the safety switch and turn the key "on" -- you should hear the fuel pump run. If it doesn't even after trying other H and P relays = a relay isn't going to fix it.

    You could always Paypal me $350 -- I won't complain ;).

How about I buy you a few beers next time you are in Philly?

I may replace the fan relays as well, just to be safe......

How do you pros feel about solid state relays?

I'm not a "pro", but, the last time I looked at solid state relays, their "off" state current draw wasn't the greatest for an automobile application with a limited battery, and they need a rather big heat sink for their "on" state (so their overall size is kind of big, and need some planning for airflow). Have you found something that might be a plug-n-play replacement for the stock F relays?

No, I was just wondering if they would be better for older vehicles that sit outside under a cover and don't get driven a lot. Corrosion on the contacts sort of thing.

    I was just curious

These relay part numbers are driving me crazy.
The owners manual does not show what relay is needed for the Fuel Pump and the Start Injector.
The one I have in the Fuel Pump (the one the mechanic installed) is 0 986 AH0 251 and that works.
The one that was in the Start Injector was 0 332 204 101 and is now as I swapped it from the Headlight Lifting Motor and it works.
    My research shows: 0 332 014 113 = 0 332 019 151 = 0 986 AH0 251 --------- BUT I'm not sure.

    Can someone:

It does, but a bit indirectly. They did leave the Bosch part numbers for those relays out of the relay list descriptions, but, if you find those relays on the schematic and look at their symbols, you can determine that:
    H (fuel pump) = ...113
    P (start injector) = ...101

    Just to close this out.....
The relay on the start injector was the culprit.
Replaced it and it fires up on the first tap of the key.
I also replaced all the rest of the relays.
    Everything works great!
    Thanks for the advice!
