My friend purchased a 1982 308 GTSI spider. 29K original miles, one owner. Major just done.
Purchase price 13K he is in it for 16K after major.
Would you keep this car for a couple of years and drive it in the non winter on the weekends. Or would you sell it now? If so what is it worth?

I say keep it and see if the prices continue to rise

When did he pay 13K ??

Because if it was in the past couple of years, he can keep it.

Less than 2 years ago a 2Vi popped up on autotrader one evening for $12-$13K (at the time I checked all the for sale sights 2-3 times per day). I waited till late afternoon the next day to call. Seller had had at least 30 calls before me and the first guy who called bought it. Was somewhere in GA IIRC. Same old story, non running, long term storage, etc. Talking with the seller he obviously had no clue about the market at the time and had no qualms about letting it go for the $12/$13K. Who knows if its the same car.

If the car is descent he could probably sell in a heart beat for $40K. $25K is a nice little profit on a car if he doesn't want it. I don't watch the market as closely as I once did, but $ seem to be softening and lots of cars are for sale a long time even around $50K and mid $40K.

OTOH, you'll probably never see sub $25K 308's again, so when could he ever get a 308 again for under $20K. IMO unless he really needs the $ based on the current market he's driving around in a basically free 308. He's got so little into it might as well keep it.

    This ^

Last winter I had a physician I knew years ago ask if I wanted his 81 GTB. I had known him and the car since about 1992. He told me is was mine for $25K. It had an electronic fuel injection set up (which I really liked) and he gave me the keys and told me to keep it for a week. I drove it for about 4 or 5 days when it developed a misfire. I felt like one plug wasn't firing, that sort of thing. Not a super big deal but I didn't want to buy it even at 25 and find out I need to spend another 20-25 on an engine rebuild. That would make it at least a 45K car, which was about right for the market and its condition but I wasn't really looking for another 308 at full retail. This was just a surprise and really good deal.

I took it back to the shop where he basically stored the car and they told me they would work out the problem for me before I bought it. Well, the car sat there for 4 or 5 months and someone ended up offering him $10,000 more for it on the spot as-is.

So that is my experience with a 2Vi of late. They go for $35,000 even when they are running funny these days.
