Is it possible to remove the exhaust headers on my 1983 308 GTS QV Euro without removing the engine? I have a slight leak in the air rails on both front and rear bank. I wanted to remove the air rails and weld. What is the procedure, and how long (hours) should this take to complete?

Yes the header can be removed with the engine in place. In fact it is much easier to do on the Euro cars. Give yourself about 3-4 hours to do the job (removal) as a first timer and the passenger side gas tank will have to come out. There are lots of threads on this topic in the archives.

I'd just get blanking plugs for the holes, you CAN install them with the motor in......

And as has been answered to remove the front one you'd get the RH tank out, drop the bolts from the engine mounts and jack the engine a little, on my North American cars......

    Good luck!

You are talking about the exhaust header CO sampling tubes?

Opposed to the air injector rails, that go into the head???
You definately NOT want to weld on the head, use plugs there!

No, the leaks are coming from the rails that enter the exhaust header, about an inch away from the cylinder head, not to the cylinder heads themselves. I have seen a Mondial with the motor out and it has a different setup than the euro 308 QV. The euro's do not seem to be threaded in like those of the Mondial, so plugs will not work.

The rails themselves, for both the front bank and rear, have been disconnected and pluged at the other end, but a small leak has occured where these rails enter the exhaust. I tried some high temp putty, but it only lasts for just so long and then fails.

I figured I'd just remove the entire exhaust, and have them welded, and be done with it. But alas, nothing is simple on a Ferrari is it???

As Tex eluded, you do have to pull the right fuel tank to remove the front header. I cant say as if you have to loosen the mounts, but you sure as hell dont wanna remove it the way I did :) I actually got it out from underneath, but it was a a lot of bad words.
