    Good day All,

In the spirit of documenting these cars, I found the following 400i on Craigslist:

    http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/ctd/2543800963.html

    1983 400i 5-Speed Chassis: 48237 (VIN as given as ZFFEB07B000048237)
Color: Silver Exterior / Tan Interior
    Mileage: 29580 Miles
    Asking: $32900 USD

I know nothing of this car and am only posting info I obtained from the ad. The pictures sure show a nice "clean" car and the engine bay looks quite tidy as well.

    Cheers,

    Sam

That looks very straight and clean, I like the colour combination too.
Does anyone know if that combination would be original for that car, or has it been changed at some point?

that looks very nice! not sure about the cream dash though, in the UK that asking price would be almost the same in pounds, there are 2 412 manuals for sale for £35k with 50,000 on the clock.

That is the factory color combo. It was offered for sale by Spencer & Co. in California in April of 2000 for $42,000.

Those of you looking for a nice 5-speed better jump quick and get this one PPI'd. If it is as nice as it looks in the photos $32k is a steal for this one. There are 4 or 5 of you who claim they are in the market for a really nice 5-speed; here is one that needs to be investigated.

This should weed out the tire kickers and those who are serious pretty quickly.

Yeah be careful there. That site is maintained by a guy who came on here and made a lot of noise for a short time. Much of which was not well recieved. A lot of the information posted on that site is incorrect. I wouldn't rely on it for history verification.

Dave what do you think the premium (if any) is for manual over auto? judging by UK prices of 412s its approx 20%

Opinion so take it for what it is worth.....
There is a premium for a 5-speed here in the states. I think $32k US is the absolute bottom you'll find any kind of decent 5-speed. Most of the nice 5-speeds that have traded hands here in the US, that I know of, in the past year have gone for the high 30's to the mid $40k range.

I get emails from guys all the time asking if I know of a nice 5-speed for sale. If I point them out I often hear, "Oh, I don't like the color." or "That's nice but I want one within 100 miles of my home." or some other reason to pass on it. Shoppers here in the US that want a 5-speed forget just how rare they are here. The total number that were ever here was only 81 cars. 25+ years later there are now less than 30 nice examples here in the US. Buyers here in the US can't be picky about color, etc. We don't have the pool of cars that europe has.

So having said that unless there is some hidden problem that a PPI turns up on the car in question here, and assuming that the selling dealer will negotiate $1k to $1.5k off the price, this appears to be quite a good buy.

This one looks and specs very familiar to one advertised on-and-off here (very recently pulled, I just noticed) by a member, and occasionally, ebay.

    Same car?

Well the silver and cream combo does look good, and original (thanks dave) I've not seen that before and.........
    ......Its a manual!
it does look straight from the pics, anyone genuinely looking for a car would have to have a good look at it.
Now just need it to be RHD over here!

Just found the one I was thinking of - Brennan's #47583, which is shown as a 1984, despite its earlier Ser. No.

Interesting. I guess the timing of its disappearance from the adds is coincidental.....or I'm going nuts (no comments, please)

Specialty is about 10 minutes from our shop on my way home. I noticed the car in their shop window the other night. Almost pulled over to take a look. If anyone is really interested, I could stop by and take a closer look.

Even if the car checks out, you may need to modify it to drive it. I suspect that the cream colored dash is going to create some impressive windshield glare in daylight.

    What this car needs:

Replacement of all bushings. Quoted 4-5k from Johannes @ Dino Motors of San Mateo

Exhaust from rear axle to back. Both Ansa mufflers are rotting and small pin holes are noted on some of the exhaust pipes leading to the mufflers over the rear A-arms. Roughly $1.5k per bank for stock replacement and $1.7- $2k per bank for Stainless steel

Some oil seepage from the bottom timing cover and were the distributor meets the passenger head in the rear of the engine bay. When the car was on the lift this was noted.

TRX tires have 60-70% tread left but they are harder than normal. $491-$516 each at Coker

    Drivers sunvisor clip is missing

Paint is a 5-10 footer. 2-3 cracking blemishes on the top surfaces of the front fenders

    Strengths:

Engine compression ranges from 165-180. Test completed less that a yr ago @ Dino Motors

Engine after warm up pulls harder than any 400I I have driven before. Quite valvetrain!

Clutch has less than 5k miles since replacement. No chatter upon take up cold or warm.

Trans shifts up and down through the gears with no grind or unusual noises.

Brakes are 75% on fronts and 50% out back.

Leveling system was serviced last year and works fine.

    Very attactive color combo!

A/C blows ice cold both front and rear. The controller was replaced within the last yr.

the current owner has owned a 365 GT4 2+2, 400i, Marenello and currently owns a stunning Red 71 365 GTC4. He was going to use it as a daily driver but never did. He put $4-$5k into this 400i over the last 8 months.

Many recent records on file @ SpecialtySale of San Carlos.

Call me @ 650 326 1000 for any additional information.

I wish I could have purchased this silver 400. Thing looked fantastic...no chance at this stage of my life though. Wife would divorce me with 2 Ferrari's.

Did an F-chatter get it - anyone know?
