Personally, I am amazed that 51179 sold for $235K USD, as the car really deserved more especially given the recent selling prices on some 308s...

This 1984 Ferrari 512 BBi is one of 1,007 fuel-injected Berlinetta Boxers built over a four-year production run and is said to have spent time in California before it was acquired by the seller in December 2013. The car is finished in black over tan leather upholstery, and power comes from a mid-mounted 4.9L flat-12 paired with a five-speed manual transaxle. Features include Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, aftermarket 17″ alloy wheels with three-eared hubs, a Bell exhaust system, Daytona-style seats with black accents, power windows, air conditioning, a gated shifter, a leather-wrapped MOMO steering wheel, and a Ferrari-branded Pioneer cassette stereo. The fluids were changed in 2021. This final-year 512 BBi is now offered with factory books, tools, service records, removed parts, a set of metric wheels, and a clean New York title in the seller’s name.

The Berlinetta Boxer model was styled by Pininfarina’s Leonardo Fioravanti and was introduced at the 1971 Turin Auto Show. The car features a steel-paneled cabin section paired with a tubular chassis. Aluminum is incorporated for the front and rear clamshells and door panels, while the lower panels are fiberglass. The BB 512i was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1981. The cars were not officially offered in the US and were imported and federalized in-period via the gray market.

This example is finished in black with a silver front clamshell grille and features a front spoiler, front and rear fog lights, side markers, adjustable mirrors, a rear high-mount spoiler, and NACA ducts aft of the doors. The front valance is said to have been repainted under the seller’s ownership. The pop-up headlights can be seen raised in the gallery along with a collection of Saint Gobain and Sigla glass etchings. Paint blemishes and a chip on one of the rear flying buttresses can also be seen in the gallery.

The 17″ Group 4 Wheels painted wheels were designed for the 512 BBi and feature three-eared knock-off hubs. They were installed in 2017 along with Continental ExtremeContact tires. A set of five-spoke metric wheels with Michelin TRX tires is included in the sale. New suspension bushings were fitted in 2014, and a rebuild of the steering rack was also performed at that time. Suspension hardware was replated in yellow cadmium in 2019, and photos taken during the service can be seen in the gallery below. The brake fluid was changed in 2021.

The cockpit features Daytona-style seats trimmed in tan leather with black accents. Tan leather extends to the door panels and center console, and equipment includes air conditioning, power windows, a gated shifter, a Ferrari-branded Pioneer cassette player, and prancing horse-branded black floor mats. The black leather-trimmed dashboard wears a matching carpeted cap. A Ferrari-branded Pioneer graphic equalizer is included in the sale.

The leather-wrapped MOMO steering wheel frames Veglia Borletti instrumentation including a 200-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 7k-rpm redline, an analog clock, and gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, oil temperature, amperage, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 66k miles, 11k of which were added under current ownership. A three-spoke MOMO steering wheel showing a June 1984 date code is included in the sale.

The 4.9-liter F110A flat-12 features Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection utilizing twin CIS fuel distributors and was factory rated at 335 horsepower and 333 lb-ft of torque. A 2016 engine-out service performed by Wehrmann Engineering of Hauppauge, New York, included the installation of replacement timing belts, tensioner bearings, and gaskets in addition to a rebuild of the distributor, a cleaning of the fuel injectors, and zinc-plating of hardware. Photos and invoices from the service can be seen in the gallery. The oil and coolant were changed in 2021.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transaxle, which was fitted with a Newman Automotive billet differential carrier during the 2016 engine-out service. A Bell exhaust system is said to have been installed in June 2019, and the removed exhaust is included in the sale. A seller-provided list of work performed under current ownership can be seen in the gallery.

That was my car. I bought it from AHudson in 2013. It's a great car and I enjoyed it. Put over 12K miles on it and did a ton of work to it.

Thanks Sam.

I felt that way, but as I have said the Boxer market is the most fickle of Ferrari markets. New owner is a good guy and the car will be enjoyed.

Good day dwhite,

I agree, the Boxer market is certainly odd...over time I suspect they will be "discovered" by general collectors and then most will be in awe of the machine that it is. Until then, it is what it is.

All the best to the new owner and I am sure he will really enjoy the car and even more so since it came from such great stewards! If you are moving towards another car/toy, then I also wish you all the best in your next auto adventure!

Same Boxer owner here from '85. I really never seen the Boxers get the respect they deserve. Get it. Drive it and see were the prices fall.
