I bought my 1983 Mondial Cab this April. The records furnished showed the belts & tensioners being replaced in 2000. So, I dutifully replaced them, figuring that I was home free. As this was my first F-car, I’d not learned about the cam belt drive pulley outer bearings. Long story short, the rear outer bearing failed, resulting in 16 bent valves. I don’t think I had accumulated 100 miles total. That was in June. Now it’s the end of Oct. and it’s finally back on the road.
I must credit F-chat for a lot of the info that got me through. In particular, Verrill Boaen’s assistance was indispensable. Without his help, I’m not sure I’d have made it. I do know that I’d have broken a lot of expensive stuff without his help. (Thanks again, Verrill) I also found that doing business with Dennis McCann’s All Ferrari Parts was a good experience. Best prices and great service.
Although this type of nightmare failure/repair has been described here before, I have not seen my engine removal method shown. I’ll add pix below, as I thought it worked quite well.
My removal approach was to use an engine puller on each side attached with a chain loop to a 4”x6”x9’ wooden beam located at the rear jacking points. Lag bolts were added to the beam ends to prevent the chains slipping off. Ropes to the front wishbones kept the beam from sliding backwards as the car rose. (Watch out for the front spoiler) Once the car was raised, I rolled a Sears ATV jack , with two 4x4’s and shims, crosswise, in from the rear and under the engine/trans cradle. Then raised I the ATV jack to take a load on the bottom of the cradle, pulled the bolts and lowered the cradle out. Have help, as it is a little shaky. One thing, the ATV jack is rated at 1500 lbs. That might be a bit optimistic, as it did bend a little. I subsequently weighed the engine/trans/cradle assy, and it was about 1300 lbs, as I’ve seen related here before. That’s without the tires or muffler. I’ll also include pix of the reinforcing I did to the jack, before I used it for the reinstall.
    Things learned along the way:
-A product called “Liquid Tape’ by GB products works well to seal up cracks in the
insulation of the flywheel pick ups and connector boots. Black, white or red.
-Pre-oiling made simple: Remove oil filter, unscrew adapt. fitting, insert long (trans. fill)
funnel and fill with oil a few times. This takes the oil to the main oil gallery. Let gravity
    do the rest. Pix attached.

    Congrats Fred,
    Knew you could do it!!

I was honored to be asked to help!!

(Fred was actually very good about calling infrequently & at reasonable times, but figured I'd yank his chain...) There were some marathon eMAIL sessions as well.
