Hello friends, I am preparing to do some freshening of my 83 qv coupe. We're going to do some basic clay bar, waxing and polishing. My car is the metallic red.

The question I have... is this clear coat? I'm assuming it is... but want to make sure before we begin.

Its clearly been a LONG time since the paint has had any care... so any other advice is also welcome.

    thanks in advance.

Generally, metallic paints are clear coated.

It is kind of unpredictable on the Glasurit painted cars. For example Rosso Corsa is often clear coated. On the Glasurite label if it has a D.S. suffix on the paint code it is clear coated.

I didn’t know 80’s Mondial’s had clear coat from the factory?
I would swear my paint is not clear coat.

And by the way, 88 Mondial, I know for a fact it’s original.
The quality of the painting done at the factory was not that great.

The short answer is no, they did not use Two-Stage clear coat at the factory when your car was built. It was single stage paint, just like my 1988 3.2

Therefore, you have to be careful dealing with this paint because you don't have clear coat on top to mess up before you get to the base coat, not many detailers know how to do this. They're used to just buffing out the clear coat.

We should likely ask if it's confirmed the car is original paint or not?

My '78 was a repaint in RC, and they did two stage it w clear etc. Originally it was Nero.

And please make sure you remove the side strakes before any detailing is done, they will break them. Trust me on this. I've repaired several of mine after purchase that were done by probably more than enthusiastic detail guys!

To do what? Remove the strikes or polish the single stage paint, please be more specific!

Well, I was meaning removing the strikes. But I'd also be interested in any recomendations for waxing/polishing the single stage paint. thank you!

All I can tell you is be careful of the sharp edges, Ferrari paint when our cars were made was questionable at best, just making sure you have someone who knows what they're doing and mask off everything including indicators, tail lights, badges, nothing you don't want to be polished out. I think being gentle with our 30-year-old Italian girlfriends is probably the best advice!

You can easy see if clear coat or not. Take a very fine sand paper and rub little in an area where it is not noticeable. When on sand paper residue is white its clear coat.
When it's the red color, it' s 1 stage paint.

My impression of the side strakes is: very, very fragile and May break if I try to remove them.

My car has original paint and a previous owner (I’m third) put perhaps 2 clear coats on it. J
