Just joined the ranks a few weeks ago and haven't stopped smiling since. When I'm not getting better aquainted with my new found love, I am absorbing as much info from this forum as possible. What a great resource!
I have the what appears to be the common 'whistling dixie' exhaust, which I have read threads on here regarding sleeves or exhaust patch to block the whistle holes in the tips. These both look like great options to reduce or eliminate this. Will likely try one of these options when I can pull myself away from the wheel long enough to get to work. Already blocked off the tips to determine the outer passenger side as the main culprit.
However, I was curious if other 308 owners have dramatically different flow from the exhaust tips. I get flow from both sides as expected, but the passenger side has very distinct puffs, while the drivers side has vitually no puffs, just steady flow. I am not familiar with the exhaust system, so maybe this is common based on the proximity to the engine or internal baffles. Just wondering if I might have a flow imbalance due to a problem (partial blockage).
    Any feedback or comparisons?

308rookie, congrats I too have an 84 308 GTS, fortunately I haven't yet experience your culprit.
IIRC both side on mine flows preety evenly without the puffs.

The passenger side has less distance to travel so it may produce more exhaust force (for lack of a better term) when felt with your hand. I have two cats (1980i) and one of them was clogged so i replaced both with test pipes but the unequal flow still exist. Driver side puts out less power than passenger side.

I maybe should not have said 'dramatically different flows'. In terms of volume, both side are likely similar volume, I just happened to notice the passenger side to have distinct puffs, not present on the drivers side. I would imagine that distance to the exhaust valves and placement of baffles would create the discrepancy I noticed. Not to sure if the exhaust is stock or not. Any ideas where I could get info that might include a diagram showing components in the exhaust?

The unequal exhaust is common, once you change to a custom exhaust you will feel a different exhaust flow and a better throttle response.

Common may be the case, but is this indicative of a properly working stock system (i.e. I'm concerned about my '83 QV that has this same condition)?

I am no expert, but the stock system seems to be more restricted, recently I replaced the exhaust on my 87 Mondial have the same results drivers side equal to passenger side, before it was unequal. Maybe some others will chime in who are more knowledgeable with the stock exhaust systems.

if anyone knows where to get these liners can you let me know. I've heard you can buy them on ebay but haven't been able to find them. I've also checked a couple of sheet metal shops but haven't found material that's thin enough to work with

    thanks

I was able to make some with 24 gauge at a local metal shop. Also bought a 4 inch piece of 1.25" outer diameter tubing to use as a mold. Do a search in the yellow pages for metal supply. An 8"x8" sheet is good enough to make 4 if you don't mess up. I went for a 16"x16" sheet and have some left over but I'm guessing you could find it locally for less than the cost of me shipping it to you.

You MAY be able to find 24 gauge stainless at Home Depot. If not, you can still buy a small sheet of 24 gauge or 26 gauge zinc coated steel to give it a try. As mentioned in the other threads, this isn't a long term solution but it did prove to me that it would fix the problem.

I have the 'exhaust whistle' (1982 308 GTSi) and have read on these forums the cure regarding the ss inserts. Sounds like a great idea. My question is can the perforated screens be removed? i.e. cut out or 'push out' the 'guts' to just leave a clear exaust tip with the full 2 inch plus diameter?
fyi, These forums are a fantastic source of great info !
    Thanks, Chuck
