I'm thinkin' that you've got the license tag from the title, not the VIN. The VIN should start out with ZFF , you can also find it on top of the steering column, on the right inside fender well in the engine compartment to name a couple. More info. on the car would be helpful Anyone notice the punch holes in the door curtain (4th pic), a tweeter of sorts maybe never seen that before!
Yes, plus it is a series 2 400i, which means that the serial number would be 42705 or later. It would be immensely helpful for the OP to ask your friend to get the actual VIN off the boss on the top of the steering column. Also, any other information about condition, service history and asking price would be helpful as well! Oh, location too!
