What do the great minds here think about this car on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250650753082&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT Item number: 250650753082 Anybody nearby that would be willing to take a look for me? Thanks a lot, Tim
Looks pretty decent from the pictures, considering. Not sure I like the fins on the side painted black (they were red on my '84 mondial QV), or the wheels. I like the Nardi steering wheel though. Worth having someone take a look at it in person. I would not bid on it or buy without having it inspected. Too many possible costly problems to take a chance, and I'd want to verify that he does have the original wheels and parts to go with the car.
I had an 83 Mondial coupe then bought an 88 coupe. Many improvements were made over the years. Especially esthetically. Read up on 308 vs. 328 regarding reliability and you will see. Some though might argue the 308's are better, purer looking than 328 however. In the Mondials case the later the better up to the 3.2's. The t's are subjective compared to the 3.2's. I keep going back and forth over selling my 3.2 coupe. It would be more im sure than this QV. PM me if any interest. Dave
I would love to know the story behind those black grates. My research indicates that very early Mondial 8s had black grates but that the factory quickly switched to color keying them. I am wondering if black grates were still offered as a personalized option of some sort or if this was owner done.
It's a 1983 US car. It doesn't look bad at all. Obviously some hoses and the plug wires have been replaced relatively recently. I don't know why the plenum paint is all gone. Maybe a personal preference? Black side grills should be body colored, but don't look bad to me. They are easily broken by careless buffing/polishing, so perhaps they were simply sourced from a black car and never repainted. It's not unusual to find 348 wheels on Mondials -- the wheels are relatively cheap on the used market, some people like their looks, and, most importantly, they reduce the expense of replacing the Mondial's tires. Rip in the driver seat is not unusual. It's my experience that the seat leather wears quickly. It's nice that the windows and sunroof work. The sunroofs are, reportedly, problematic and expensive and/or time consuming to replace. If you are serious about the car, contact the seller and ask: * Does the car have its original fuse box? * Does every single button and switch work? (Do lights come up at same speed, does AC work, etc.) * Has the car had a timing belt change? If so, when? * Have the fuel hoses been replaced? * Have the coolant hoses been replaced? * Does the car overheat? * Any rust on the car or bubbles in the paint? The rest of the questions you should ask are the "normal" used-car questions. The above are the important Mondial questions. Good luck! I have an '84 Mondial Coupe, and they are fantastic cars. Way, way underrated. The current eBay price (under $16k) is a good deal. If the price climbs much, however, you may want to check FerrariAds and look for "Birdman's" car. It's a Coupe for under $20k as well, and has an excellent service history. --Jeremy
The ad looks pretty good, and with a recent "Complete Service" then it is very, very well priced - assuming full veracity.
I talked with the seller again today and asked him to scan and email me the service records. He said they were over an inch thick and he could not do it. I then asked him to just email me the latest, but I had the feeling he wasn't going to do it and as of now still hasn't. He said he has only owned it for a few months. This deal is starting to acquire a foul aroma..
If the seller can't even tell you the date of the last major service, I'd say pass. It's an interesting car, and the no reserve is tempting, but as so many others have said here so many times, there's no such thing as a cheap F-car. Also as others have mentioned, there are some great Mondis for sale for very affordable prices. Birdman's Mondial, and Scaledetails' 3.2 coupe can be had for what appear to me to be fair prices, and you know that they are both well sorted cars. Good luck finding your car.
This car caught my frugal eye as well... but no reserve and an owner that has only had the car a few months spells trouble, IMO.
Thanks for everyone's input. I talked to two people who had previously purchased vehicles from this individual and both said to stay away... So I did. I hope the purchaser has good luck, he certainly bought it cheap enough. Thanks, Tim
