I just purchased a 1984 Mondial. The car looks and sounds great, but has absolutely no performance! I've had other 308's in the past, but never had this sort of issue and never had a QV. I'm very familiar with the Porsche 911 CIS system of the same vintage. This car looks like it has the same system. The 911 had a "lambda" computer under the passenger side seat that was turned on and off by a relay. When the relay failed, the car drove smoothly, but like it was pulling a boat anchor. This car feel the same way. Is there a frequency valve on this car that is controlled by an electronic box? If so, where is it? Are there other possible causes for the lack of performance? I don't have any lights on which might give me any clues. David Nolen 1984 Modial Cab
Depends on your "version" of 1984 MondialQV -- US versions have a frequency valve; standard versions do not (the OMs have OKish descriptions of both the injection and ignition systems). Both versions also have quasi-separate ignitions systems for each bank -- 1st thing to do IMO is to confirm/deny is whether or not you've got ignition spark on each bank during the "no power" condition. If that's OK, then start looking at the injection stuff. You can download any F OM from www.owners.ferrari.com (after registering) Good luck with the hunt...
David, I had a similar problem with my '84 Mondial QV when I got it two years ago. It turned out to be the rotor on the rear bank. It had virtually self-destructed. At low rpms it sounded fine, but at high rpms, it felt like I was dragging an anchor. I changed the rotors, ignition wires and wires from the coils to the distributors (installed Magnecor 8mm wire set), and new spark plug extensions. Also, there are two Digiplex units mounted on the fire wall. I pulled and cleaned up those connections as well. Changed the spark plugs for Bosch's. After that, the car ran great. You might also check the coils themselves, if all else fails. After I got it running okay, I ran several tanks of gas through with Chevron Techron to clean up the injectors. Just a few thoughts. Ditto, Mine was the same, sluggish, misfiring, but always started OK. Did the same thing as faster, now goes great.
