Can anyone help me with these symptoms? I've owned the car about a year, with no engine problems until now. 35K miles. Low engine vacuum at idle, slow down light comes on, exhaust pipe gets hot, running rich, fuel smoke from exhaust. cat was checked, doesn't appear to be clogged. o2 sensor replaced, but didn't help. i'm not very technically oriented, but can pass on
any info to my mechanic. thank you!

I had this problem on a porsche, yurned out to be the air meter by the intake plenum, basically a butterfly valve, that was stuck open (but that might be what you call the o2 sensor) does your oil smell of petrol? If so then you've got bore wash and an over fueling issue. otherthan that cant help I'm afraid.....

I'm no expert but I'd check the crank sensors, sounds like some of the cylinders aren't firing at all. The excess fuel is going into the cats causing them to overheat thus turning on the slow down light.
if you do a search for crank sensors, I think you'll find an easy (ohmmeter) test procedure for them.(there are 3)

    (It's a single-cat '85 so only the single thermocouple/ECU/light).

mas -- Are you saying that your mechanic has also already confirmed that the ignition is all OK yet you still have the problem?

There have been so many 308 owners over the past year that has had this same problem...mine was two years ago. Very common and no symptoms to tell you you're about to have the problem.

I would check both banks ignition before driving the car any further. It sounds very likely one bank has dropped out and the car could be running on four cylinders. It seems rediculous, and I would never have believed if I had not seen it myself, but the cars run very smooth with one bank shut down. Symtoms identical ie dramatic loss of power, wont rev, etc...

But, the car is still dumping fuel into the non firing cylinders, and the excess fuel is burning in the cat and so many things can cascade you couldnt believe it. Cat can catch car on fire if your not careful, due to excessive overheat, muffler can melt, at the very least.

are these possible solutions still viable given the low (2 in.) manifold vacuum?

Sounds like you've lost a bank. Pulling a couple of plugs should tell you which one & from there just start working through all the things that have been mentioned. Most likely culprits are the crank sensor(s), or possibly the ECY,coil, or the Coil-Dist lead.

If you have lost just one or two cylinders then look for holes in the spark plug extenders.

As has been indicated, don't drive it till you've fixed it - stuff will start melting.

tach works. even with loss of spark, wouldn't the vacuum stay normal? my vacuum is low, and i was told that may indicate the timing belt jumped a tooth?

Is it Popping or Backfiring? That could indicate a problem with one of the 2 computers.
