I am looking at a locally owned 85' 308QV black on black. It is a 3 owner car with an immaculate service history documenting the cars 30k miles. The mechanicals are sound with a fresh servicing and the interior is as new with very little wear even on the bolsters. They are asking $28,000 for the car because the black paint is SHOT. It is flaking up in many spots and is cracking in other locations. They are deducting the cost of a nice paint job from what the retail value should be on the car. Am I correct in assuming that a paint job will run me $6-10k? Can I just have the poor spots touched up? There is no bondo or bodywork on the car whatsoever! The car is so mechanically perfect that the paint really doesn't scare me all that much. I don't want to show this car, I just want to drive it. Should I be concerned?

The best paint guy I have ever seen charged $3k for his work. Now I have seen nice jobs for up to 10 K like you are talking about, but the best pne I saw EVER was 3K. And he would STRIP the thing down before he sprayed an OUNCE of paint.

The price of the paint job I guess is a function of how much disassembly you do before painting it. Hey, take it to Maaco and get a paint job for $199. KIDDING.

BTW, the car has PLENTY of Bondo on it. It is under the primer, right where the factory left it. These things are famous for having tons of filler on them right from the start.

But....WHY is the paint flaking? Is it a repaint with incompatible paints?

If you just want to drive it, you can probably get a good quality paint job where stuff is just masked, not disassembled and not stripped to metal for more like 3-5K. Some people think this is better because disassembly/assembly can cause some problems. Could be a good deal.

Sounds like a pretty good price for an 85 GTB QV and a REALLY good price for an 85 GTS QV. I'd say your paint quote is a tad high. As others above have said, depending on what you want done prior to paint it should run 2k-5k. I am a tad partial to this color combination :)
