    Good day All,

In the spirit of documenting these cars, I found the following 400i on Ebay:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140611987778&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME%3AB%3ASS%3AUS%3A1123

1985 400i Auto Chassis: 54123 (VIN as given as ZFFEB06B000054123)
Color: Black Exterior / Tan Interior
    Mileage: 12247 Miles
Item Location: Tinton Falls, NJ, United States
    Price: Auction with Reserve

I know nothing of this car and am only posting info I obtained from the ad. The pictures sure show a "clean" exterior (tail lights are swapped) and a nice interior (except for the driver's portion of the dash).

    Cheers,

    Sam

Exceedingly nice looking car eh Sam? Thanks for posting.

It's rather obvious that this cat has been "done" inside. But then there's the occasional imperfection that says, maybe original. I don't see any bolster wear at all.

I would do a black dash top pad application and smile all day, at the right price. This and "Dave's Blue" are the best colors. With the tan, they're perfect IMO, and probably best Ferrari buys just nipping the 308GT4s.

I knew something about that car looked familiar! That car used to be white! In 2002 it was for sale on Ebay and had a rear wing on it. If you look close you'll see some interesting, some good, and some bad, things on this car.
    Taillights swapped
Rear bumper painted the wrong color/sheen
Check out the right brake light, you see what I see?
New exhaust that must have cost a bazillion dollars (anyone price them recently? I'll guess 6K? I don't know)
    New TRX on the rear
Tweeters wired into the coin trays
Look at the paint runs in the door jam
That is a stickered speedo for those of you who don't know; so 12k miles? Uh, not so much.
Is that an original Neiman key is see? Cool, you don't see many
Factory dinoplexe still hooked up and working; amazing (I'm looking for one if anyone has one for sale)
Any of you see what is missing in the engine bay? This is a series 2 car; look in front of the oil filler, see what isn't there?
The seats are obviously re-done but look at what a nice job they did on the door panels. All that stitching is really hard to get right. Those are really nice! I can't figure out why they wouldn't do the dash since they had all that time and money on it already

I don't know the car, but the seats have been redone. No biggie there, but I don't believe for a second that it is a 12k mile car.

The stuff that hasn't been replaced is really torn up. No way the car is that little traveled.

    Maybe overheated a few times???

Okay Dave, what is missing in front of oil filters? I have a bunch of clutter on mine from an air pump controller so it is hard to see what is missing.

    Oil filler, not filter.
It's a series 2 car. Where is the oil tank for the load levelers?

I didn't notice that. Leaking for sure. Again an easy fix, why would you paint it, redo the seats, yet not replace a rusty cap?

The amazing thing about this car is that, when it was white, it sold at the January 2001 Barrett Jackson auction in condition 2 and 7,200 miles on the odometer for a selling price of $43,200! Looking at it now, I have to wonder if I recorded that correctly but it could be researched and verified on the BJ website, which does a good job of keeping the historic results of past auctions posted.

In June of 2002, a year and a half later, as Dave says, it appeared on eBay with 10,200 miles, repainted in black with an ugly spoiler and Ferrari shields on its flanks and it sold (or at least winning bid) for $23,100!

Talk about value destruction! A loss of $20,000 plus the cost of a paint job and spoiler in 18 months!

If the oil reservoir for the rear suspension is missing, which it appears to be, that must mean that coil overs have been installed back there. Not necessarily a bad thing, a lot of cars have gone that route. The 400i 5 speed in the town next to me just had that done (along with a redo of the front suspension) at the shop we both use and the owner is very happy with the results.

That is the thing about these cars, they all have a lot of history over the span of 24+ years and not all of it is recorded or advertised, particularly the bad parts. Because these are not high value cars by Ferrari standards, ownership chains can get, shall we say, a little "murky" and there can be huge gaps in understanding who owned the car and what happened to it during those lost years.

That is where the detective work comes in handy, along with resources like this board, of course!

    Hi guys,

Just found the warranty card and owner's book of this car #54123, in France !
Just the first page filled in, the rest brand new.
If you know who owns it or where it is, it could be nice to match the car and the book !

Will be pleased to sell it back.

    Best

    Paul
