The 560SEL for sale here benefits from the refresh Mercedes did for the 1986 model year. In 1986 all W126s received bigger brakes, flush headlights and restyled body cladding. It also marked the first year that the 5.6 liter V-8 was available in the 560 series.

Despite having 176,000 miles, the exterior of this 560SEL is still easy on the eyes . The Midnight Blue paint (code 904) stills shines across the car. The hood, roof, and trunk are starting to fade and the clear coat is beginning to peel on the passenger side, but overall the car will ooze style as it is cruising. Accentuating the dark blue is the original trim and grill which still glisten in the light. Adding some flair to this car are the dealer option 15” chrome Gullideckel wheels that are eye-catching regardless of some curb rash. Walking around the car you will find some scratches and small dents showing the car has been driven and enjoyed for decades. The car is nearly rust free with only some minor rust around the drain holes on the bottom of the doors.

On top, the car features a sunroof that is not currently functioning but a new switch is included with the sale. Along with the non operational sunroof, the front right door does not open from the outside and the lock does not match the others. The car could also use some new door seals as they can leak water both inside the interior and trunk. The windshield has also been replaced at one time, but now has a small rock chip in the lower left corner.

Inside the car the interior is almost entirely original, with the head unit being the only non-original part. The interior is worn, but shows how much this car has been driven and enjoyed in the past. The leather on the seats is cracked and worn, and does have some rips but could easily be reupholstered. Despite the seats showing their age, the reclining rear seats still function. Looking up you will find the headliner is sagging in the rear from where a car phone antenna was once installed. The wood veneer accents are faded and are starting to peel, but they are all still there. All the dash buttons and controls are still intact and the window switches still work. The air conditioning does not currently function, nor does the clock but the interior could easily be brought back to its original luxuriousness.

Mechanically this car is set up for success and has been very well cared for since the current owner acquired the car. The original 5.6 liter V-8 has had an abundance of maintenance done it. The timing chain, guides, tensioner, and cam oiler were replaced at 172,000 miles by Black Forest Benz in Milwaukee. At the same time both fuel pumps, fuel lines, and filter were also replaced. Since then the Valve cover gaskets, thermostat, oil pan and gasket, transmission fluid and filter, and various rubber hoses have been replaced. The engine runs smoothly and pulls hard.

Once the engine was done, the current owner moved onto the suspension. The car features a self-leveling rear suspension which the owner has gone through and replaced the accumulators, fluid and lines. The front and rear flex disks have also been replaced, as well as the front upper ball joints. The suspension still has some worn bushings and parts, like the lower ball joints causing the car to have loose steering. Most recently the car was serviced in the summer of 2021 with a fresh oil change and new differential fluid. The buyer will also receive a complete service history dating back to 2018.

Having spent its life on the West Coast, the vehicle was purchased by the seller in 2018 who then drove the car from Washington state to its current home in Wisconsin with no issues. While this 560SEL is need of some work, it is the perfect platform for someone looking for a running project. Being mechanically sound, you can drive and appreciate the car while fixing it and making it pristine. Once finished, the car will show others that you have a taste for the finer things in life but also appreciate the allure of a vintage luxury car.
