Hey all, Saw this car in the "Mondials for Sale" thread, but it doesn't look right compared to my 88 3.2. The wheels look like QV wheels. Did Ferrari put the "older" QV wheels on the early 3.2 cars? James Here is another 1986 3.2 red/tan that sold on BAT in March. Notice the wheels... Image Unavailable, Please Login
From (long time ago, I sold my 3.2 in 1989!) memory, the wheels' design changed when they introduced ABS.
I have an early (non-ABS) 3.2 and the wheels match the car in the photo--not the ad. Looking at my copy of "original Ferrari V-8", it appears that the car in the ad has wheels from a QV. To WilyB's point they did change the wheels between models, not strictly tied to the arrival of ABS. Another thought, could these indicate TRX tires? Those would have been standard on the 8 and QV, an option on the 3.2, and not available on the T.
You could get either metric or standard wheels for a 86 Mondial like Peter stated and the ABS wheels are convex versus concave for the non A.B.S. wheels.
All Mondial 3.2 and t models left the factory with convex wheels—in both 16 inch and metric (metric on 3.2 only) sizes. Concave wheels were used on 328 models (pre-1988.5), not the Mondial 3.2/t. That being said, my guess regarding the car in the ad is that the QV style wheels were installed to replace OEM metric rims. They might even be the "repros" offered by Superformance.
Yeah, I get convex versus concave, the 328 has this as well. But the ad shows either metric or QV wheels. The specific detail I'm looking at is where the lug bolts are. On my 3.2 (and the last picture), the lug bolts are located in a flat hexagon shaped area. In the car for sale (which, according to the ad has the same owner for the last 30 years), the lug bolts are located in the middle but they have little notches in the wheel, it does not form a flat hexagon. To me, they look like metric wheels/TRX, but when looking at the BAT ad, I cannot see the tire details enough to know if they are metrics. As above, maybe they are replacements from Superformance?
I saw this car on AutoScout24 with 328 wheels. Looks kinda cool. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
