As a give-back, below are a few "as found" pictures of both front wheel bearings on my 1986 TR that I recently re-packed. The first pictures are the left front inner and outer bearing rows followed by the right side. This is what the original factory greasing with very low miles looks like. Both sides look about the same, and I was a very surprised how little grease actually surrounded the ball bearings themselves. For those of you out there that see this all the time, maybe this is not surprising. In any case, this re-pack now has zero voids and gives me comfort knowing so, and thus a new starting point. Romano, I had posted 10 pictures with a total below the 5mb limit per FerrariChat rules. Now posting just 4 pics way below the limit. Again, bearing and race surfaces are "as found" and not wiped clean. EDoug.

I'm getting some weirdness, too. In EDoug's posts I only see "[ IMG ], [ IMG ], etc.". If I click on one of the [ IMG ], a new FChat tab opens, and, if I log in there, as requested, the picture appears. If I then return to this thread without exiting FChat = all the pictures appear. If I exit FChat and return to this thread = I'm back to [ IMG ], [ IMG ], etc..

Yours is far better than most I see. Many have nearly no grease on any surface. Since it is not truly sealed I have long felt it is just evaporation since grease is just oil in a carrier. Good that you are doing that. The replacement bearings are not nearly as good a bearing as the originals. They were used in all Mondials, TR's, 328's F40's and 412's.

Thank you Brian. I will just go with evaporation as the root cause, and hope those reading this will understand same. EDoug

Brian, now that he knows, wouldn't that be a good reason for Craig to repack his original front bearings instead of using the aftermarket ones he purchased? EDoug

If they are noisy as he said its too late

Regular knowledgeable service keeps that from happening. I have not replaced one of those in close to 20 years. Over 15 for sure.
