I just bought a 1987 3.2 Cabriolet (have a post in technical section), and it smells like it is running very rich. It runs well, but I am concerned about the smell of the exhaust. Is it normal for the mondial exhaust to be very potient? It really has a carbon monoxide smell. Just had an engi e out service in September.

A US version 3.2 should never run rich when warm (if working as designed). Is it a US version? If so, is the O2 sensor plugged in or disconnected?

Thanks Steve, it is a US version.
I will check the O2 sensor plug tomorrow.

While you are there -- check if you have a catalytic converter or a test pipe (although a cat would have to be bad/ineffective to be running rich and not have the coachwork catch on fire ;)).

The O2 sensor is plugged in and it does have a cat. To tell you the truth, I was coming from a point where the car was not fully warmed up. I warmed it up and drove it and all seems to be OK. I did not consider if it was fully warm or not. If it is not warm, it really smells like exhaust. I guess that is an older ferrari engine for you. I have lots of things to get used to with this car. Thank you for your help.

That's a little bit normal as the WUR causes the Fuel Distributor to add extra richness when cold, but it shouldn't be excessive, and the frequency valve can correct the air-fuel ratio a little bit during warm-running if the mixture screw is tweaked a little rich. Warm-running can almost always be good (even if something isn't quite right) because that's the condition where things are adjusted; however, proper cold-running is very dependent on the WUR changing the control pressure the right amount from warm to cold, and the mixture adjustment being correct.

One other issue is that the air injection system should be operating during cold-running which would also help reduce the emission smells (and the air injection does not operate during warm-running so, if not working, you wouldn't notice it at all during warm-running). Sounds like you aren't having any operational problems, but those are some areas that could influence cold-running being "smelly".

Thank you. What is WUR an abbreviation for?

On a side note. My 83 QV always smelled rich. And after numerous system checking, I finally started pulling plugs and of course the hard to reach front side were all black. Pulled the distributor cap and it was very corroded and the graphite pin was stuck. Purchase new wires and cap and it cleared up the rich smell also runs and starts amazingly now. Looks like since the front side is difficult to reach the PO must have only serviced the back bank and never replaced anything on the front bank. Sometimes starting with the basics is something I should have done.
