has anyone experienced a rotating-type of noise on a 328 which sounds like the ticking of a roulette wheel while the car is moving down the road? the noise appears to be coming from the LF brake, as the noise goes away when the brakes are applied. this noise just "appeared" when i was out for a run. it almost sounds like something is jammed in the caliper. when the car is loaded on that wheel the noise does not gain in intensity or shake the steering wheel so i don't think it's a wheel bearing. could the pads be "chattering" on the rotor and then tighten as brakes are applied? haven't pulled the wheel yet, but looking thru to see the rotor's condition it appears to be shiny and smooth.that brake does not pull or exhibit any decrease in performance when applied hard.all else seems normal except for the strange sound. would appreciate a little guidance... thanks
You may want to jack to front end up with support then spin the fron wheel by hand and look and listen for noise. Also look for something obvious.
i think i found the problem.... it appears the "spring silencer" which attaches to the outside rear of the caliper has fallen off. i suppose this allows the pads to float freely in the caliper knuckle and account for the rotational clatter. when the brakes are applied, the pads clamp against the rotor and alleviate the noise. unless someone can counter my observations, i'll have to assume the diagnosis is as stands. i still welome any rebuttals however.
just a quick update: apparently the spring clip which preloads the brake pads to keep them from rattling as above had fallen off the caliper for whatever reason. after searching several vendors, i found new ones at t.rutlands. they are ate parts but the correct ferrari number is #95691541 for anyone suffering the same fate.
