    Hi,

I've recently purchased a 1987 Countach QV FI, and I'm having some problems getting it going. It hasn't been started for quite some time, and has travelled less than 4,000km's.

What I have done so far
    1. change engine oil, it smelt of fuel
    2. fresh fuel
    3. new ignition, the previous owners mechanic had damaged the original trying to get it going
    4. new spark plugs and leads
    5. replaced both fuel pumps, as r/h side was not working
    6. unplugged the cold start injectors as the engine seemed to be flooding

Now I have a situation where the injectors are passing fuel as soon as the pumps come on. I've overridden the pumps and even before you lift the air flow plate they are passing fuel, and it doesn't seem to make a difference when you do lift the plate. This is happening on both sides of the engine.

Any assistance will be very appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Matthew

With you car not being started for so long, and so little miles, your issues could be just about anything......

First, I would suggest removing the fuel injectors and either have them cleaned, or just replace them. The entire fuel injection system on the Countach is basically (2) 6 cylinder BOSCH K-Jetronic systems from a Mercedes, Porsche, etc. Most all the fuel injection components are available and quite inexpensive. For example, your cold start injectors are the same units used on the BMW 320i. Fuel injectors are same units used on numerous Mercedes models (450SL, 190, 280, etc...).

There is a relay in one of the "brain" boxes (on the '87 cars, I believe the box is situated behind the air cleaner on the passenger side of the car. It should be evident by a green and red LED on the outside of the box). There is a relay inside that box that controls the fuel injection and shuts it off in the event of a crash. That relay could be bad.....

Another notorious item that goes bad on the FI Countach is the Magnetti Marelli ignition box (behind the drivers side air filter box). A lot of folks replace these with an MSD unit set up for 12 cylinders and use an MSD blaster coil. Provides a mush hotter spark and the car idles much better.

Thats just a few things from my little knothole that I can think of...... I'm sure others will chime in as well.

Post pictures of your new baby and Congrats on the purchase too!

Matthew, could be the fuel distributors are gummed up from sitting for years. As all the fuel to the injectors comes from them.

I, as Mike says, think you would be better off changing the ignition over to the MSD system, cheap when compared to the Lambo part, which is around $2700.00.
