As an old Porsche hand I think this is a beautiful car. I've never owned a water cooled Porsche as you can see from my profile. What is the hierarchy of desirability of the 928 variations?
Beautiful car. As far as desirability, this one would be one of the top choices. Here's a post I snagged from another site listing some of the differences between model years: Looking just 5sp models made between '87 and '91 model years, there are really five or six different versions depending on how one counts them. '87-'88 S4 manual without or with 40% LSD - In US models 5th gear is tallish 2.20:1 '89 S4 manual without or with 40% LSD - Basically same as previous except gearing was 2.63:1, '87-'88 ROW S4 use this same gearing - Dash was changed to more modern digital version at beginning of MY - There were made only up to point when GT arrived and only about 50 US models exist making them rarer than '89 GT '89 GT, always manual with 40% LSD - Different cams, pistons and LH & EZK programing result 10 hp more - More important thing than those 10 hp is that gearing is shorter 2.73:1 - There were other more minor differences also like shorter gear lever - M474 sport suspension might have been stock '90 GT, always manual with PSD - Only really new thing was PSD and airbags, except in ROW cars where bags became standard little later - M474 definitelly optional this point forward as it was in S4 '91 GT, always manual with PSD - Changes to power steering, sound insulation and different gear knop Value conscious choice is S4 with LSD. PSD is more modern technology but in my opinion is not alone worth the cost difference from S4 to GT. If you on other hand want to have digital dash you either have to find '89 S4 from somewhere or settle for GT. In both cases its going to cost more than earlier S4. Its all up to you if it makes sense to spend more $$$$.
Don't know why you would start with model year '87. Many 928 enthusiasts consider some of the earlier models as desirable as the last GTs produced. Personally, I have had at least one or two 928's in my stable for over 30 years, all Euros and all 5 speeds, and my all-time favorite 928 is the '85 Euro 5 speed (it introduced ABS one year before the US models).
Dearly miss my '87 S4. Mine was an early one with the folding rear spoiler. Best wishes on your sale & hope it finds a happy new owner.
Thanks for the info, David. It sounds like, at least among the later cars, the GT is the most desirable, with the S4 a close second.
I concur with this list, if you are just considering MY 1987-1991. In the 928 Universe writ large (US models), the hierarchy is: 1. 1993-1995 GTS 2. 1989-1991 GT 3. 1987-1989 S4 4. 1986 S (16V) 5. 1982-1985 S 6. 1978-1981 928 (plain) Right now, The 5-speed manual cars trump the automatics hands down, and it's reflected in market prices. It's the only important option/discriminator. LSD is vary rare, and is easy to add later. Rear A/C is desirable in Southern markets, but has reliability issues, and is expensive to repair. Digital dash was gimmicky back then, and has become more of a maintenance liability now. Sunroof delete and rear wiper delete are extremely rare on US models after 1986. For pure power, the pre-86 Euros were popular on the Grey Market in the 80's. The '86 became a World Car, with little difference between US and Euro specs.
For my money, I love the early cars. I would take a 78. The OPs car is beautiful. Best of luck with the sale.

Back in the day, the 928 S4 in auto form was the quickest car on the planet from something like 60 to 90.

Thanks Much! I greatly appreciate that. A "nice ad" post is just as rewarding as a "nice car" post. I try to write my ads the way I want to read them, with all the important facts, and none of the subjective opinion. I try to advertise in venues where the car is recognized for what it is, without a lot of explanation and hyperbole. As you mentioned, targeting the right audience goes a long way to creating a good ad.
I had an 87 auto, it wasn't quick off the line but once rolling it was a rocket back in the day. Had some trans issues with mine. If it was a 5 speed I would still have it. Fun car for sure. Glws

That is a very nice looking 928. Have you considered posting it to the Rennlist classifieds? May generate a lot of interest there, as it has a huge 928 crowd.
