I have been offered a local 328 GTS. Looks really good and genuine but the service history is missing. Seller says he lost it when he moved coast! Car fax is good and books/tools are with the car, mileage says 35k and it looks genuine to me. Paint and interior are very good. Anyway I can get the car for 35k which seems a very good price for a 88 328. What do you guys think?
Please note I am confident enough in the condition after my own inspection. I also own a 308 and can do the belts and major service myself no problem. Which I will do straight away just in case. I just thought this would be nice to have as a daily driver for a bit. My big worry is if I sell the car later I may have problems with no history. Or maybe if I own it a few years and document what I do to the car I will be OK?

    Great price, I'd take it..

Since you're buying low, a hit on resale won't hurt so much--if you ever sell it..!

    I question the price.

    Why so low?

The lack of history is all I came up with. Funny thing is the car has been for sale for quite a long time but just in local Sunday paper. The guy got no calls after two months so pulled the add and is now trying word of mouth!

35K is a steal, assuming it has no major mechanical issues (compression is good, etc.)

    hello

per n.a.d.a. guides a 1988 ferrari 328 "average" retail is $41,300.00 there are no cheap ferraris. this car is priced below retail for a reason. do your homework, get a PPI. if everything works out, it's a 50/50 gamble.

    good luck.

    just my $0.02

Thats a good price......I bought my 308 for a great price and it was listed for sale on this sight and it failed to sell. My car is also 1976 red/tan fiber glass which is supposed to be very coveted. You can find some deals but its the exception most of the time. By the way, I had a PPI done. Why dont you pay $300-500 and have the car inspected for your peace of mind? By the way, what color is it? Color can have a great effect on value.

assuming it's a US spec, not euro and NO damage history, you really need the engine inspected. If you have to do a rebuild, plus pumps, trans, alt, blah, blah...you'd never get your money back. I see these cars needing major ening work at 40k to 60k mileage ranges. just my .03 cents

PS: that Ferrari Market Letter thing of $41k number is ASKING, not sold price

A proper PPI will answer many questions, like - is it - - or isn't it? Are we OK here? Sometimes, owners want to move on to the next level - whatever that is - and the buyer benefits from the seller's desire to "move".
Look at all these dynamics. Know what I mean?

    Cheers, Hank

Caveat emptor: A PPI is a good idea, with or without the records.

Misplacing records during a move can be an issue, especially with a "relocation" mover (packs and moves). I'm still trying to locate my service records folder after my move. (But I still have dozens of unpacked boxes.)
    (But I did find a spare AFM for a GTV-6 I sold 17 years ago. ;))

But in terms of selling, it is the most recent records which are the more important ones.

But leave your address with the seller: the records may turn up some day.

Thanks for all the feedback. The car is black with black interior by the way and its being sold by someone close by to me. He says he just wants out of the car and has bought a 997. It drives stops and handles fine. I have been over and under it extensively and checked out eveything bar doing a compression test. I am sure the present owner will bbe happy with me doing that aswell. The only problem I found was weak A/C. I really dont see a PPI doing any more at this stage. I really feel confident in the condition and as stated will do a major service etc as soon as/if I get the car. I feel fine doing the work my self if anything else comes up.

My real concern is/was the lack of service history. Interesting that the average retail is $41k I imagined most were selling for more like 50k plus. I think the lack of service history drops the car about 5k and me having to do the major myself another 5k.

I will keep you updated. Thanks.
