Did the factory install radios in 328’s? If so, what brand of radio?

Blaupunkt were often installed in Euro cars, Pioneer seemed common in the US. They would have been cassette players.

You can wire an old Blaupunkt to have a phone jack plug that you can play a modern cell phone through the system.

All 328s left the factory with speakers ("Autosonik" brand) already installed in the doors, and wired to the rack for the head unit, but WITHOUT the head unit /radio itself, which was left to the importer or even dealer to provide, either for free or for a paying supplement.

Some importers had sponsoring agreements with electronic appliance brands, such as did Pozzi, the historic french importer in France, which had a sponsoring agreement with Pioneer in Rally Racing; this explain that most french Ferraris had a Pioneer head unit, and, in many case, as a gift (= not paying) from Pozzi.

Otherwise, the available head units came most often from the catalogue of the most popular brand in the country were the car was sold: many, almost all, german Ferraris had Blaupunkts, for instance.

    Hi Mark;

My April 5, 1989 produced 328 GTB, # 81085, delivered new in Paris to its first owner - a Parisian - on May 17th, 1989, by the historic french importer, "Automobiles Charles Pozzi" has an "importer & dealer" installed and given for free Pioneer KEH-5060B, with the little "Cavallino" badge at bottom left.
Still working fine, by the way, even the tape deck, except for the passenger side (right side here...) speaker that has gone mute; not that I use it often, but I have to check the connections one day...

As for my '89 GTS, #80515, produced on February 24th, 1989, sold new in Germany, she has a Sony CD head unit, which is not period correct: no 328 was ever delivered new with a CD head unit in Europe as far as I know, only tape decks; must have been installed "later"; didn't even try it for the first twelve years that I owned the car; tried it last year, it works, but it will be replaced by a period-correct "Blaupunkt Bremen 46" in due time.

"it will be replaced by a period-correct "Blaupunkt Bremen 46" in due time."

I had been planning to install one in my 89 328 and just this morning went to order one from Crutchfield (USA) and found the radio listed as "discontinued. " :(
I assume (hope) that meant that Crutchfield discontinued carrying them, not that Blaupunkt quit making them! I'll look elsewhere...

    Hi Mike...

I see 811 occurences here, with repeats of course, but the prices are going up...
Furthermore, these are SQR-46, the "euro" variant, which might not work on the same frequency range as for the US.

There is no USA HD radio version of the modern Bremen: only the DAB version for the rest of the world.

The Bremen was marked “discontinued” by Crutchfield when I was shopping for mine. I phoned them and they explained that they do that because they get too many people pre-purchasing via their waiting-list. They will make it available again when/if they get it back in stock.

As for me, I ultimately purchased from Amazon Germany, which was a better price anyway. Here is my story:

I remember Clarion advertising as the official radio for Ferrari back in the 80’s. My Mondial 3.2 had a Clarion and I was convinced that was the “correct” radio since Clarion wasn’t really a household name for aftermarket radios. Many people in an old FChat told me I’m wrong, and maybe I am since I don’t have a perfect memory of that old 80’s ad. However, I just did a quick search of “Clarion Ferrari radio”, and it looks like Clarion supplied radios for the California and other newer models - so maybe my memory from the 80’s is correct.

This is NOT the Clarion ad I'm remembering -- it's just a Clarion ad from 1984 with a Ferrari in the picture, but not saying they are the official Ferrari supplier.

Maybe this proves I misremember it -- but here is a 1984 Clarion ad nonetheless ...

I also ordered a Bremen from Amazon Germany for my 87 328 and it was a really painless transaction. Shipped quite fast too. I still haven't installed it since I enjoy looking at the original dealer-installed Alpine stereo. Plus, I figure the old speakers are probably shot by now and need to be replaced to get decent sound out of a new stereo. If I ever have a reason to pull off the door panels I'll install new speakers and then probably go ahead with the Bremen install. I don't really ever have the urge to listen to music when cruising around in the 328 so this is all low priority for me.
