MONDIAL JUST GOT A NEW STARTER TODAY AND WENT FOR A DRIVE. STARTED TO NOTICE A CLICKING NOISE FROM ENGINE (RIGHT BELT SIDE). APPEARS TO RUN FINE WITH ALL GUAGES OK. WENT STRAIGHT HOME AND PARKED; AFRAID TO RESTART. NO OIL OR WATER PUDDLES. IDEAS??

    Michael,
That ticking noise, i've been told, is the alternator belt when cold. It usually goes away after it warms up. When cold, the belt "takes a set" which has to work itself out.

TOM,THANKS FOR THE REPLY. THE CLICKING NIOSE STARTED AFTER THE CAR HAD BEEN DRIVEN ABOUT TEN MILES, NOT AFTER FIRST STARTING. ACTUAL CHAIN OF EVENTS, FIVE MILES ON CITY ROAD, 5 MILES ON INTERSTATE. I GOT TO LOCATION AND STOPPED FOR TEN MINUTES. AFTER RESTARTING IS WHEN THE CLICKING NOISE FIRST APPEARED.

Can you be more specific about the area of the noise? It can help by placing a large screwdriver against various parts of the engine / covers / etc & "listening" to it. Where is it noisiest? Is it a metallic sound? Put a dab of white pen on one or more of the external belts. Does the ticking happen in time with one of the belt cycles?

Thanks for the reply. I will try your suggestion this afternoon and report back. Hopefully, I can be a little more precise. Again, thanks for your help.
