    History
In 1975, Porsche unveiled its first turbocharged 911 with the internal model number 930. The now familiar wider stance was introduced along with the “Whale Tail” rear end. More power was on tap and with it came some wild and wooly load transfer dynamics, requiring TOTAL driver engagement.

Initially running a 3.0L flat-six motor, a 3.3L version was introduced in 1978 with an air-to-air intercooler and horsepower jump from 256 to 296, along with upgraded suspension and braking components. Early 911 Turbos were produced to meet racing homologation requirements but, unsurprisingly, customers were soon frothing for them.

One such fan was Masour Ojjeh, owner of Technique d’Avant Garde, otherwise known as TAG. At the time, Porsche’s 935 was dominating its class racing circuit thanks in part to an ultra-slippery front end that benefitted from a lack of headlights protruding into the airstream. Monsieur Ojjeh wanted one for himself and commissioned the wizards in Zuffenhausen to build just such a machine.

The 935 Street was thus born and well-to-do Porscheophiles everywhere noticed. Their demand was so strong, it spurred Porsche to offer this conversion as a package on new 930s. It kicked off the company’s Sonderwunchprogramm or “Special Wishes” team that was tasked with production, which is the predecessor to today’s Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur program.

As a new 930 rolled off the production line, technicians would disassemble the front end in order to reassemble it with the Flachbau (Flatnose) bodywork. It incorporated broader rear quarter panels with those gloriously straked intakes, extended rockers and of course the signature shaved and louvered front fenders hiding pop-up headlights. All this hand-work meant these cars were significantly more expensive than a regular ol’ 930 which resulted in less than 1,000 made globally and only 160 coming to North America.

    Exterior

The striking 1988 Flachbau up for auction today is finished in its original, special-order Granite Green Metallic paint. Staggered-width, Fuchs alloys are color-matched along with Porsche crest center caps featuring polished lips and deep-dish rears. Cross-drilled rotors are clamped by black-painted calipers with white PORSCHE lettering.

Integrated front foglamps can be seen up front and the side mirrors are heated and power-adjustable. The spectacular exterior condition of this Flatnose can be attributed to some 200 hours of detailing completed in 2015, per the seller.

    Mechanical
Sitting out back, the original, air-cooled 3.3L flat-six engine sports a single turbocharger huffing through an air-to-air intercooler mounted within the “tea tray” rear spoiler. The powerplant produced 282 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque when new and is routed to the rear wheels by a 4-speed manual transaxle.

    Details
“Unicorn” is a term bandied about on the regular these days when referencing special automobiles, but the factors that apparently qualify a car for such status are sometimes questionable. With this 1988 Porsche 930 Flachbau, there are no question marks. It’s a unicorn, plain and simple. Only 145 of these rare factory-made examples landed in North America for the 1988 model year and the custom green theme going on with this specific Flatnose makes it that much more unique.

Completed on December 9, 1987, this car was delivered new to Thomas Haythe via the Pray Porsche-Audi dealership in Greenwich, Connecticut. Mr. Haythe retained the vehicle until 2000, at which point it passed through ownership in the New York City Area. It was subsequently sold to Steven Hutchins of Torrance, California in May 2006 with 23,447 miles on the odometer.

Mr. Hutchins carefully maintained the vehicle through 2011, at which point it was sold to collector Nate Murphy of The Woodlands, Texas showing 28,435 miles on the odometer. A CARFAX report details the car returning to California in 2015 where it reportedly underwent nearly 200 hours of detailing to bring it up to show standards. Later that same year, the car was acquired by, a private collector in Texas. The seller purchased the car from this collector in January 2018 and it has resided in Vancouver, BC since his purchase.

Now showing 29,000 miles (46,400 km) on the odometer, this notable 930 Turbo comes with known ownership history from new and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.
