I wanted a GTB and was willing to search for as long as it took. Turns out it only took a couple of months. I bought it from the original owner who is in NY state. He even gave me the original window sticker showing the price of $78,880. He said he could have sold it two years later for $130,000, but had no interest in parting with it. He and his wife made it a most memorable and pleasant experience. My face hurts from grinning so much. I flew to NY and drove it back to North Alababma. 14 hours and 950 miles (split over two days). I don't even know if the radio works. I never turned it on.
57,200 miles when I took the keys Monday afternoon. 58,200 today. It's a driver, which is what I wanted. No interest in a garage queen. Of course it's coming up on a 60,000 mile service. I gave $45,000 for it. Maybe too much, maybe not. I dont' really care. I got exactly the car I wanted and that's all that matters to me.
Beautiful car. Bought an 86 just like it, same miles a few months back. It's in for its 30k plus more. Wonderful, fun car!
Congrats! Its always great to see someone buying a car from the original owner. I hope you keep it as long as they did. Good luck, and welcome to the GTB club...
I do not think you over paid at all. I Saw an 89 GTS red tan with 98500 miles sell at one of the auctions in Arizona in January for 40,000 plus commision. There was also that yellow on tan 89gts that sold at Barrett Jackson in February for 55,000 and that car had alot of miles as well. The GTB you have is the rarest year. I believe about 29 in 89. Contact Larry O'Rourke he is the Holder of the GTB registry and get your car registered. I think this is the site.. http://www.328gtb-registry.com/ Congrats. now get that service done.. JJ
I submitted my GTB info to the Registry months ago; it hasn't been updated yet. Is Larry still maintaining the site?
Thank you for the heads up on the 89 328GTB s/n 79730. Much appreciated. This car was an original owner car & had not changed hands since 1989 & that is why the VIN transfer was never picked up. This car is the 91st verified GTB out of the approx. 125-150 mfg for the US. The registry website will be updated today. Best Regards, Larry O'Rourke (88 1/2 GTB s/n 77394)
Congratulations, Richard! Welcome to the GTB club. Let's see the pics from your 950 mi. drive home! --AP
As usual, I forgot to take my camera. Did the same thing at the '05 World Series. Excitment apparently clouds my senses. I was walking around in a daze leading up to my trip to NY. I was a bundle of nerves. I had to check my duffle bag on the drive to the airport to make sure I remembered the check.
Congratulations! You certainly did not overpay. That's a gorgeous 328, and 328s are phenomenal sports cars. You already made the first right move driving it back instead of shipping it! That ones a keeper. 10 years from now, your kids will no longer have to be burdened by the question "Which car will I take my date to prom in?" hehe!
Congrats! I too bought my '85' 308 from the original owner and I noticed you are in Alabama. Given your occupation, I would venture a guess you live in Huntsville. If that is the case, Mike Charness, a moderator on this board and President of the Ferrari Club of America/Southeast lives there. In fact, I will be there this weekend.
Richard, Congrats. I saw that in the FML last month and thought it might be an interesting car being 1 owner and all. I have GTB 79392 for last 5+ years. Enjoy it! Dave
that is SOOO AWESOME!! Many congrats! I have yet to wipe the smile off my face and I bought my car in April!!!! Your kids are adorable as well. You have a LOT of fun times ahead! Post lots of pictures when you can. We won't accept the 'forgot the camera' excuse... JIM
Thanks for the kind words. Yes, I live in Huntsville and have already been in contact with Mike. My boss was asking me about the car today and said a member of his church has a 308. Turns out it was Mike he was talking about. My kids, especially my son, are so thrilled. All he's said for the last two days is, "rarrari daddy, ride it?". My wife had bought a soft sided Italian car seat a few months ago, which happens to fit nicely in the passenger seat. So tonight, I strapped him in and took him for a spin. He was all smiles.
