Not sure about 1989, but my very late U.S.-spec 1988 came with NO radio...only a vinyl covered blanking plate.

All cars were delivered to the dealers from FNA with NO radios. they had a small cover plate in the dash. They came with small tweeters on the dash and wiring for speakers in the doors. The installer would cut the carpet and put speakers in the door. Buyers would pick their favorite brand radio. Sony, Alpine, Blaupunkt, Becker, were the usual choices. Mostly this was done to be a profit opportunity for the selling dealer.

On a 328, you can mount the speakers in the door behind the carpeted part of the door panels, without cutting the panel.
The carpet section would act as a grille and let the sound through.
That way, you could take the door panel on and off without having to move the speakers.

Alas, too many installers went ahead and cut holes in the panel, and mounted speakers *through* the door panel, requiring the speakers to be removed in order to take the door panels off.

The cars came with a six pin blade connector for the stereo: ground, +12 (constant), and left and right speaker pairs.
The speaker pairs ran to both the doors and the tweeters.

Since the stereo installer on my car removed the connector, I replaced the connector with an 8 pin 6.3mm blade connector, adding wires for dash lighting and switched power.
(I tapped the switched power to the driver's window.)

Since my door panels came already cut, I added a pair of two pin connectors on each speaker, so I could unplug the speakers when removing the door panel.

Did the cars not come with door speakers already installed? They are shown in the parts list. Also the tweeters in the dash.

Mine are branded Pininfarina which is cool. I assumed they came with the car.

Yes, the cars came from the factory with the speakers already in the doors, but no radio.

Mine came from the dealer with a Pioneer radio CD player. I can get back to you with the model code if need be.

My '89 has a Pioneer KEH-P3600 radio with cassette player. Presumably installed by the dealer, but I can't say for sure.
