When I bought the car the 1-4CEL light was on then after some use it went away. Three driving seasons later it's back

I looked up the procedure for pulling the code. When I push in the little black button next to the 1-4 ECU the CEL light goes out but nothing happens after that. The procedure I have says the CEL should come back on for a couple seconds and then will start flashing the code sequence....but I get nothing, light stays out.

When I restart the car the CEL1-4 comes back on and stays on. Anyone have any thoughts? Do I have the wrong procedure?

    Thanks in advance

    Put the gearbox in neutral

    Start the engine

Let the cel lights go out

    Leave the engine idling

Push the button and hold for at least 5 seconds

    Let the button up

Cel light should illuminate for 2 seconds

If there is a code stored the flash sequence will start

At the end of the code the cel will illuminate again for 2 seconds

The get to the next code press and hold the button for 1.5 seconds just as the end off code cel light starts to illuminate. Let up on the button before the 2 second illuminations is over.

Next code will start its flashing sequence

If all codes have been flashed, or no codes remain, you will get nothing but long 2 second illuminations of the cel light.

Press and hold button for at least 5 seconds to end the code session. I usually hold the button down for at least 4 of the long illuminations.

Yep thats the procedure I'm trying to use.

    1. CEL1-4 never goes out after step 2
    2. CEL1-4 goes out after step(s) 4/5 but never comes back on.

I'm pushing the little black button right next to the ECU behind the passenger seat. Only thing that happens is the car noticeably drops in idle 2-300 RPM and feels sluggish until I restart the car. CEL 1-4 light never comes back on after steps 4/5. Am I pushing the wrong button?

    Thanks

After the car has sat all night. Disconnect the battery for about 30 seconds. Reconnect the battery start the car and then let it sit and idle for 15 minutes, without touching anything. What you are doing is having the ECU relearn the initial start up parameters. Try that and see what it does.
