    Hi guys
There is a yellow 1990 TR with roughly 30 000 miles for sale here.
The only thing I'm worried about,is the fact it has a 512M gearbox and clutch.

Could you please give your opinion on this modification ?
Is it a nice upgrade, run for your life etc etc ??

    Thanks in advance
    Marco

This is something you want. It is probable that somewhere in its history the differential broke and took the side carrier with it. We have been discussing this on another thread.

The 512M gearbox has the stronger one piece differential and some other design strengths. This pretty much assures you of not having a catastrophic failure in the box.

Most people would consider this a good plus.

I would ask for the work to see what and why it was done.

I have a 1990 TR and wish it had the 512 gearbox as long as the mod was done correctly it should be seen as an upgrade and as long as you are not going for show level originality then it should be a positive.

Nobody would make this mod unless they were a) racing the car or b) had a major failure. I would see it as something that should add a level of inquiry to the PPI and be fully documented with repair invoice and history.

    Marco,
In 2001 i had a 1995 512M gearbox retro-fitted into my '88 Testarossa and it has run like a charm ever since. I had this done b/c my 1st & 2nd gears were failing due to fairly agressive up and over shifting habits. Although this is definitely a great upgrade it may be indicative of a car that has been driven rather hard!

    be careful.

True but on the + side you will probably never damage the 512M box & Ferrari engines are much stronger than their transmissions so the engine should be strong too

I would say its a great combination but definately get a PPI

Is the 512tr box the same as the 512m?

    no, it is similar

the 512M box is the strongest of all, the main shaft is maybe 30% thicker than the 512TR which is already thicker than the older TR box

Thank you guys, for your great replys. They have been very informative.

Does the 512M gearbox have different gear ratios, maybe for better acceleration ?
