Really looking for a 355F1, but I heard of a 91 diablo for sale locally, 25k, supposedly serviced and in great condition
what's it worth and how "reliable"/worry free could one expect this car to be
    Thanks!

85-100K depending on color, record of services, # of owners, location of car, updates, dealer or private sale, and condition of the clutch.

Car is fully depreciated. The 355 F1 will continue to depreciate a bit more. The car is reliable, if it has been serviced. At this point, all the weak points should have already been taken care of. The 91/92 Diablo, is about the best bargain genuine 200mph Italian exotic you can purchase.

    Check the following

    The clutch
    The clutch
    The clutch
    Chain tensioner update.

If you want to drive the car at fun speeds, you should consider putting Brembo brakes on the car.

find out about the clutch history, as this could be a $12K job.

In overall terms of full blown maintenance, which one is more costly? From what I've read here, it would seem the 355 could be. Potentially.

That's possible due to the engine out service, I don't know if that's the deal with a Diablo..

I was also thinking if the lifters go out again. The headers weren't replaced with ones that won't shatter. Etc.

the diablo is likely much cheaper (no belts, no faulting headers..)
as already stated by Ralf you have to be sure clutch is good (and tensioner were upgraded on early cars)

A clutch job on a Diablo is around $8,000 and not $12,000. The $12,000 figure comes from people doing extra maintenance or preventing stuff to the car since the engine is already out, but a Diablo doesn't require engine out for belts since its chain driven.

I woulds say a well sorted out Diablo 91 92 93 with records and decent mileage would go for around 110K to 115K. One with no records which means you are taking a big financial risk 90 - 95 trusting that the only issue is that the engine has not been serviced and it is running OK. My 92 with 16K miles on the clock with a full engine rebuild, meaning that I had the whole engine pulled disassembled (New gaskets / seals / Valve job / Porting /balancing /New Clutch/New alternator/ change tensioner upgrade and various other minor parts replaced) with full documentation with Pics, I couldn't let it go for anything less than 115K.

Testacojones is correct, that in my case the Clutch was going and since I was going to have the Engine pulled anyway I went the extra mile and had it completely torn down so that when it was complete I knew for a fact that nothing was going to fail. Let me tell you after it was all put together cleaned and painted BOY WAS IT A FEAST FOR THE EYEs. I almost hated it to being but back in the car.

Also there should be no guessing about it Service means alot of deferent things to deferent people. Some dealers think that a Valve job is a service. You have to understand what was done in the service and not take someones word "You will get Screwed". Also the time frame of the last service was it a year, 6 months, a month with the associated miles. But lastly get a PPI done by an independent shop of your choice not affiliated with the place you are buying the car.

I hope this helps you. I have been down this road, research and advice went along way in finding the Diablo that was right for me in price and quality.

    Regards

OK, but don't tell that to the previous owner of my Diablo, he paid $16K for the clutch job. Of course if you know the right people (like I do, thank god), you could end up spending half that.
