So I broke a belt to the alternator yesterday.. At least she did it in a nice part of town.. When the flat bed arrived, I decided to do the major on her now... So when we got to FOH I told them, lets do it.... I was given the price range of 7k to 12k.. I have to say, it makes me nervous! What a chunk of change... Geez! But I want to keep her. I want it done right, And I want recourse if it is not.... She only has 27k on her.. The car is in great shape cosmetically. They also said up to a 2 month process... Is that high? Seems like a long time...

These photos were taken at The Ferrari Festival last year in Houston.. I let everyone sit in the car and take pictures...

2 months for a major service? If I'm not grossly mistaken, FChatters have done majors themselves in their own garages in less time than that.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Two months is a long time for about 40 hours labor.

Maybe so... But I can say with confidence, I do not know what the heck I am doing when it comes to the engine bay.... I can take some pretty great photos though... : )

That is what I was thinking... They made it sound like the parts for the major were scarce... We all know that is not true...

Take it to somebody who wants the work. It ain't rocket science, thank God, it's a 348.

    Absolutely.

Also, are you in a position to ask for a complete breakdown in costs ie exactly what parts are used, what work will be done and what is the labour charged at ('book time' for the service at a main dealer is 38 hours I believe)? $7k minimum so guessing that's nothing extra over and above the schedule needs doing? Would be very interested to see how they get to $7K.

Complete engine out on a 348 as per the Ferrari service schedule using all Ferrari OEM parts undertaken by Maranello trained techs over here at my Main Dealer is considerably less than that. If they are doing bags of work over and above the recommended Ferrari service schedule, do you want that work done? Just really curious to see how they can justify up to $12k to be honest. Putting it in perspective, starting with an engine out service you could follow the schedule every year at a main dealer here and quite literally service a 348 for 9 years using all OEM parts doing a cam belt change every 3 years. On the 10th year, so your 4th engine out cam belt service, you'd pass that figure. That is what it costs charging 38 hours (which my main dealer does, that's the 'book time') and using OEM parts bought from the factory in Maranello.

My last rant on this I think, you guys are being totally stiffed if a main dealer can't do the service as per the schedule for under $7k. Read what is done in your book, price up the parts required, work it out.

I just had my major done by an independent for less than 7K and it included new water pump, some plastic covers and new oil temp switch and a fix for my overtightening the gear oil drain plug.

Get an itemized report of what they did.. for your own peace of mind AND for the next person who buys your car. They'll want it.

40 hours is the labor... 2 months? sounds like they are pretty busy.

I'm not aware of any parts for a 348 major that are scarce. Having done more than a few, I can tell you that there are no functions in the job that require specialized tools or knowledge beyond what a good independent shop would have. Additionally, at the dealer you may have trouble getting them to use the upgraded Hill bearings. Check that. If it were a 458, on the other hand.....

Plugzit, you've done a few? Got a question for you then. How much do the parts cost?

When I was looking at doing my own major... roughly $3400 including a new water pump.

I looked at sourcing parts from a few different suppliers US and UK and got it down a bit from that but then there was the PITA factor of shipping from different places.

    Thanks David.

All I'm going to stop preaching that you lot are paying too much, said my piece. In the UK our prices are so much lower (like a 1/4 sometimes) and there is no reason for it. It certainly isn't because the mechanics are any worse (all main dealers ones at my place are Maranello trained) or that the parts are inferior (they are bought from Ferrari - the one in Italy :) ). One day maybe your places will have to follow suit, maybe not. Anyway, I'm out.

    Pete,

That was a blend of parts of the UK and the US. I have a whole spreadsheet of the parts needed with it broken out to vendor. Agreed some of the UK vendors were more "reasonable" then their US counterparts. On some parts they were more though..

OK, were you just doing as per the schedule or over and above that? That service as per the schedule, item by item, will cost you about £1500 in the UK, fixed price, I can post as many sites offering it as you like. My main dealer price matches so that is what they will do it for if you're pushy (which I am, in case no one noticed). They get the parts cheaper and just charge you what they cost. They then charge an hourly rate which is comparable to my local VW or Audi garage. One of my cars is a Skoda (don't start, good cars). My last annual for the Skoda at a Skoda main dealer cost me more than my last annual for the 348 at my Ferrari main dealer - straight up. These are not complicated cars.

Anyway, I said I was out. Quit trying to make me defend my position, I'm useless at backing down. All I know is that I will get my cam belts done every 3 years (sorry Ernie, I'm a disappointment) because I'm charged a reasonable price for it. That is all. I really, really am out :)

Have you considered taking it to Sphere Motorsports? I don't know what they charge for a 348 major service, but it may be less expensive than the dealer, and I know they do a fantastic job.

I agree with everyone else.. my mechanic said the service is only a 40 hour job.. it could go 2 months if they only work on it an hour a day!

Kit from Ricambi is about $1700 US. That does not include a water pump, which I believe is around $700.

The economy in Houston is great. It seems like everyone here has an exotic. The good shops are so busy they're getting to the point of having a waiting list. 2 months and $7k-$12k seems about right to me.

I take that back... I was including in the oil tensioner update pricing.

    Attached is the parts list.
