    For those who watched, does anyone know why they recommended that the drivers open their visors and then slap them shut during re-fueling? Hobbs and co. touched on the issue but never answered the question, and David seemed right to me in suggesting that if there's a fire/detonation risk the driver would be best situated with his visor shut. Can anyone offer insight?

    I bet it is the fear of a fire during refueling. Remember Hockenheim the previous year had the awful incident in the Benetton pits.

    Obviously you want to open the visor when coming into the pits as you are breathing heavy and have no air flow so it starts to fog up. But when refueling closing it makes some sense.

    I remember Verstappen in a Benetton burning his face at a pitstop, after a fire started when refuelling, this probably led to the recemendation that you mention.

    But the impression they made was that the manufacturers of the fuelling rigs suggested that the drivers open their visors to begin with. Almost as if it should become part of the process, and then shut it as they pulled away.

    Also, did you notice how hard the cars were dropping down from their jacks? My god, I wonder if that alone ever led to mechanical problems.

    They also mentioned that last night, it does look odd how the cars are dropped but apparently it was ok according to the benetton guy who's now a commentator (did say the reason either)

    Yeah, I can imagine that teams like Benetton and Williams built stouter cars than some of the other teams. I wonder about some like Forti, Simtek, Minardi, etc. Remember in the race when Hill's suspension broke? I wonder if whatever failed could have been exacerbated by the pit-stop-drop.

    Sounds about right. You think they no longer have that? Would be silly not to.

    I'm not sure if they still had the air hoses then. I remember the hubbub about it back in the 80s and it being medical air that wouldn't burn. And you could see the big hoses that connected it to the helmet. I'll have to check the history of that, unless someone knows the years they used those.
