First let me start by saying this is such a beautiful car. It's always been my favorite looking Ferrari from the 90s.

Question: I've read on this forum and others about some of the issues these cars can have and how expensive it can be to maintain it. If I purchase, this will be my first Ferrari.

    Any thoughts? Thank you!

I've had my 355 for 2+ years, runs fantastic. Moral of that story, find the correct technician and service it well. I love my car.

What does it typically cost you to maintain? I've heard rumors of the 30k mile Major Service costing upwards of 40k, Any advice would be appreciated..

    Nice car.

Major engine out service runs around 6500 from a qualified independent or dealer. Whoever's rumors you are listening to is doing you and the model a huge disservice. Spend more time in the 355 section and less time on rumors.

    GLWS.

the OP mentioned the engine out is due in 2 years..
depending when it was actually done.. the 2 more years can vary..

if the car is otherwise in good running condition.. you "could" expect to drive it worry free for 2 more years..

other then regular expenses such as insurance, gas, oil changes etc..

as mentioned above, an engine out services is not that bad..
but if you want to do other preventative maintenance such as new headers at the same time.. that can be another ~$3000..

therefore if you are interested in the car.. it looks to be a very nice example..
but would have min 10k ready/available in 2 years...

and it goes without saying.. it is ideal to be ready/capable financially to deal with anything that may come up along the way..

Really pretty configuration on that car. Sounds like it is set up well.

I would figure about $3-4k to be budgeted per year to cover maintenance, consumables and "surprise repairs". You may not spend a dollar on it for a couple of years above fluid changes but there are some expensive repairs that may be needed at some point. If you can set aside that amount per year then u would be more than covered. If u get a trouble free car then theres a little college money set aside!

On any pre 1998 vehicle you may want to confirm that it has factory steel valve guides or has had them installed already during one of the major services. That alone can be close to $10k.

All in all my 355 has been very reliable and runs fantastically. I wouldnt hesitate to take it anywhere (as long as there's some safe parking). Just take care of the maintenance and you will be happy.

Also, if you decide on a "rougher" example you will save some money on the purchase but will likely need to do some initial work to bring it up to a solid baseline. Just a matter of what you want ur journey to be. Happy hunting (dont buy a corvette).

That's crazy!!! Had a major done and some other bits replaced before any potential problems. 40k...LOL, sounds like some insane sales pitch. Don't believe the BS. Ask here first.

This is a manual so you won't have issues with failed F1 hydraulic pumps. Considered a 355 for a long time before winding up with a 308. Was warned by various dealers and independent shops that the major failure points are 1) early factory valve guides were made of a softer metal that can wear, causing the guides to walk down into the head. Should be replaced. 2) with the high-revving engine that some say works best with the slight back pressure of OEM cats, it can generate a lot of heat that can crack headers or burn out cats, and those are pricey (looks like THAT has been addressed here), and 3) the convertible top mechanism can be wonky. Some people say budget 300-500 a month to set aside in your "rainy day" fund. This is a COOL example for your first f-car. Happy Hunting.

    Thanks everyone for your comments.

I would like to say that the F355 is a pure fun to drive ... and the sound is just incredible!
As for any other exotic car, the key is the maintenance.
What ever you buy, do a full inspection on it and you will be safe!

Noticed that you had a lengthy SDL string when you acquired the car. Can you speak to how the car had been since? Do you have detailed interior to include dash pics?

SDL ECU was defective so I do the modification on all SDL ECU to bypass this problem.
No more SDL system is needed as the exhaust system has been upgraded with Tubi test pipe and Fabspeed + Capristo exhaust.
So next owner do not have to worry about that and if they want to come back to the original SDL system you just have to change 3 SDL ECU and it is back.
