My mechanic tells me I need a new ECU for my 97 355, quoting me $3500 for the part.
    Sound reasonable?

The "slow down" light came on, car shut down and will not restart.

    Thoughts?

Bosch will repair their ECUs for as little as $300. You have a Bosch Motronic 5.2 ECU.

You also will want to know if your car isn't restarting due to a fuel cutoff or due to a spark cutoff. The easiest test is to buy a $2 spray can of starter fluid and spray it liberally into your air intake.

If the car still won't restart after that, then you have a spark problem. If it does restart with starter fluid, however, then you have a fuel flow problem.

Once you know spark or fuel, then you can start looking for components (like alarms and ECUs) that impact those systems.
