    To all,

I am thinking about getting my first Ferrari after a fairly long line-up of sports cars (including 5 911 Turbos ;-). Currently I have a new 7 series Alpina, a 996 TT from Techart with 540 hp, an Aston Martin V8 Vantage, a TVR Cerbera 4.5 LW, a TVR T350 and a 330 Bimmer. Believe or not, I manage to drive all of them and put quite some miles/kms on my cars (total combined around 38,000 miles a year), and this is where my questions arises.

Having some cars to chose from I think that it would be financially unwise to go for a later 550 with low mileage and higher price, as I will drive it for sure and will thus affect its resell value as if it was for a "normal" car (Am not looking for a garage queen).

My search has thus taken me to the early cars, that is late 1996, early 1997. I have found a local car, one owner, December 1996, silver/black, Tubi exhaust, full service, including all recalls (wheels, windows etc.) and 26,000 miles. Price is around 110.000 USD, probably negot. down to around 105.000. Car comes fully serviced and 1 year warranty.

Are there any pitfalls that I should be aware of on the early vintages. I will also be adding upgraded brakes and suspension for the car (too much understeering) and was interested in 19 inch wheels probably HRE or Cargraphic, anyone out there gone with aftermarket wheels, thoughts, pictures etc.?

Thanks and hopefully part of drivers soon.

    G.

it's had its major 30K service recently?

other than that, if all the recalls are done, you should be in good shape.

consider getting a PPI and make sure the mechanic checks out all the TSBs - especially the motor mount failures. you might considering doing the PPI at an authorized dealer to see if FNA might cover any of the TSB issues (eg: the motor mounts), should they find any problems.

Gl 911, wow, sounds like a great garage! My bet, from my own experience, you will not drive the rest too much after the 550 arrives. the 97 sounds like a great car, and the mileage will not hurt much as these cars willl never get too cheap imo. Sure the price dropped a lot, but they are such great all around cars the support will become strong at around 80 at the bottom is my feeling. Have them take care of the 30k and post some pics when you can, John

The price sounds very high for a european car.

By comparison, from an italian newsletter i get:

    550 Maranello, 2000. Silver/Gray, CDchanger, elec seats, 5,236 miles
    59,900E/$71,880
550 Maranello, 1997. Red/Black, CDchanger, elec seats, only 2 owners
    48,233E/$57,880

    Dan,

The prices you quote on the Italian newsletter seem REALLY low, almost suspicious. Any more details?

    Thanks
