1997 Porsche 911 Turbo- Only 53K Kilometers https://shiftgate.com/auction/1997-porsche-911-turbo/ Auction ends Friday, April 8 at 4:00pm Eastern History In the mid-90s, Porsche unveiled the 993 generation 911 as a replacement to the 964 and swan song for their air-cooled flat-six engine. Noticeably more aerodynamic with new front and rear styling, the 993 only carried slightly more than 20% of the prior generation’s components. A light alloy subframe and fresh multilink rear suspension dramatically improved handling, namely by reducing the infamous lift-off oversteer condition. It was the new Turbo model, however, that stole the 993 show. Setting the future 911 Turbo tone, this all-new 993 model was the first standard production Porsche with twin turbochargers and permanent AWD. Cylinder heads were redesigned, twin air-to-air intercoolers were integrated into the glorious “whale tail” rear spoiler, suspension was beefed up, the bodywork was widened and…the list goes on. Suffice it to say, this new 911 Turbo was poised to set the auto industry on fire with its performance. Exterior Sporting a killer black (L741) paint job, this 1997 911 Turbo looks to be in excellent condition. Design highlights include wider rear fenders versus the period Carrera, fixed rear “whale tail” spoiler housing intercooler and intake components and the heckblende rear panel embedded with PORSCHE lettering. Headlamps are clear, body panels are straight, there is no rust present and the wheels look amazing. They are staggered-width, 18” Turbo Twist hollow-spoke alloys with Porsche-crest centers. The seller has fitted new Michelin Pilot Sport 2 rubber, sized 225/40 up front and 285/30 out back. They frame 12.7” cross-drilled rotors at all four corners. The aluminum calipers, four-piston front and two-piston rear, are finished in red with white PORSCHE lettering. Additional features include headlamp washers, integrated fog lamps, rear windshield wiper and dual, stainless-steel exhaust outlets. Damage from an incident noted on the CARFAX report was professionally repaired per the owner, with invoices and photos documenting the fender bender included in the sale. The performance certainly did set autodom alight, and journalists into wild, rabid fans. Motor Trend described “face-smearing accelerative force” after clocking a 0-60 mph time of 3.7 seconds, 60-0 mph braking distance of 99 feet and top speed in the 180 mph range. These were staggering figures 25 years ago and still incredible today. The 993 Turbo was a crowning achievement for the 3.6L air-cooled engine that defined the Porsche 911 for generations, and is a Porsche purist Holy Grail. Interior Black full leather (VD) wraps the front buckets and extends to the stitched dashboard, door panels and center console. The seats, with wear detailed in the gallery, feature embossed Porsche crests on the headrests. An interior highlight is the optional Carbon Fiber package that includes inlays on the instrument panel surround, lower dash fascia, emergency brake and door panels. This is accompanied by an Exclusive badge on the passenger-side dash, indicating the Porsche “Special Wishes” department had a hand in outfitting the cabin of this Turbo. All surfaces look to be in very good condition. The 3-spoke, leather-wrapped steering wheel with Porsche crest frames a 7,800-rpm tachometer and 200-mph speedometer with inset odometer. These are flanked by VDO instrumentation for fuel level, oil level, oil temperature, oil pressure and a clock. Additional cabin amenities include stainless steel Turbo doorsill covers, red lettered PORSHE floor mats, sunroof, cruise control, red seat belts and the factory AM/FM/CD player audio system. Mechanical The original rear-mounted M64/60 3.6L horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine is fitted. It features dual 50 mm KKK turbochargers arranged in parallel with air-to-air intercoolers. Making 400 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque when new, the motor is paired to a 6-speed manual routing power to all four wheels via a viscous-coupling system. A lightened flywheel and Sachs sport clutch have been fitted and per the owner, the motor runs strong with no issues.
