Hello guys, first time here and am happy to have found this forum! I was looking over some of the posts on here and was wondering if a late 1998 355 after assembly#27689 valve guides went from bronze to steel is indeed a fact? The reason I'm asking is I've found a nice 355 with assembly# 27868 that I'm interested in.

I know this may be tough to guage, but what might be a fair price on a 1998 355 spyder red/tan 13K 6spd ?

    thanks guys....

Need a few more questions answered before you can get a decent response. Has the 30K been completed? Have you had PPI done? Is it well sorted (all records, keys, accesories etc) included? Has three been any previous paintwork or body repairs performed (other than the usual front bumper work for chips etc)? Does it have stock exhaust or was it modified?

And yes, the values wnet from bronze to steel then.

Get a carfax report, it doesn't cost much.

The owner has had the car since 2001 with about 6500 miles. The 30K was performed 3 years ago with 10,000 miles on it with a new clutch. Currently it has 13K.

As for paint work, no knowledge of paint work or body work whatsoever. Not sure if he is the 2nd or 3rd owner so hard to say what the other owners may have done. Also it has stock exhaust.

PPI has not been performed since the price hasn't been set and the carfax report I got from him was from 2003. Owner plans to order a 430 and wants to sell this baby first.

Just out of curiosity, who confirmed that the late 1998's did indeed clear the valve guide issues?

    thanks guys!!

still curious to know if any owners here with 1998 355 with assembly numbers higher then #27689 needed a valve guide fix ?

anyone have an aprox what the minimum and max resale is on a 1998 355 spider 6spd(red/tan) 13K miles...with 30K performed 3years ago? I'm being told $90K, but that seems too high.

I bouoght one in June with a higher number and it already had the valves changed and the 30K done. Been driving it at least 3 times a week and the only problem I've had after about 3,500 miles was a throw out bearing that we fixed.

As far as prices, I looked for about 8 months with cars ranging from $88K up to as much as $105K with miles ranging from 8k UP TO 22k. We looked these over pretty good and had PPI tests as well as visuals done on any of the one's that looked good to me. While it cost a bit to do the PPI's, I would have not done it any other way. This test alone was able to show me vehicles I did not wan't to get involved with.

After a lot of looking, I bought mine for arougn $95K and have never looked back. Buying a "bad" one could be real costly. Take your time, ask a lot of questions (and get answers to them). It will be time well spent. You will get educated in the process as well as hopefully find the vehicle of your dreams (not nightmare).
