Hello all, Are the 1999 355's suseptible to the header problems also? The dealer said they were not??
The dealer is not being honest with you. All 355's are at risk. Will yours, specifically? Who's to say, but it appears from this list, that at least 50% of 355's have experienced one or more header failures (all years)...Obviously you may end up being one of the "lucky" ones...I hope so. I know a guy with a 99 with the manifolds replaced.
If you can't see the burnthrough with the heat shields on then what is the best way for a mechanic to inspect for cracks??? Can they scope it. I have a mechanic in Fort Lauderdale checking it out Monday afternoon.
A bore scope could see it if you have the header off the car. The failure usually happens just around the first bend when viewed fron the cyl head side. None of that is practical on a PPI. Just be aware that it happens, and might happen to you.
As hard as everyone has tried, no pattern has been found, with one exception. The early cars with the early style air inj tubing had thinner wall tubing and maybe a different alloy (I can't remember what Ferrari told us). Those headers were far worse. I have seen many headers burn out cat/no cat, Tubi/no Tubi, driven hard/ literally driven by little old lady. Sorry wish I could help but you just have to accept it as a possible cost of ownership. But don't forget, I don't know the details about the rest of the country (I only know about Ca, different in other areas) but if the car was originally was put into service here and is still here those manifolds are covered for 7 years.
They rebuild YOUR manifolds, I do not beleive they have them on the shelf. Have you determined that you even have a problem? You are posting all over the site about this...it seems to have consumed you at present.... Dave
I bought mine from QV. Luckily they had a pair on the shelf. Mike sent them out while I had my car's engine out service done. They were $2100 with shipping and the exchange rate. Probably a little more now. Mario
I would rather have them replaced ahead of time than out on the road. Just precautionary (it's the pilot in me).....
