I just bought a 355 F1 that has been in storage for some time. The car has had fluid changes and belt services but has rarely seen the road. It was stored well: climate controlled, battery and fuel kept properly, engine started and run regularly, etc. When I purchased the car, it started, ran and drove.

The car will need some work to become road worthy. When I took delivery of the car after having it shipped from the east coast the battery had died. I charged the battery properly and have not been able to get the engine started since it's arrival. I am a professional technician with master level training as well as a workshop manual(3 volume set that came with the car).

Here's what I know and what I have tested:

    1. The fuel in the car is good as is the filter. The fuel supply to the engine is good in terms of pressure and volume supply. The fuel lines to the fuel rail/return are installed correctly.

    2. I am missing the ground supply from the DME to the ignition coils, hence, no spark.

    3. The crank sensor has been scoped and is good.

    4. I read that the right-bank camshaft phase sensor is a Hall Effect Sensor but I cannot seem to get a reading on it's output with my scope. I replaced this sensor for drill(it was cheap) and it did not help.

    5. I have checked continuity between DME, coils, crank and camshaft sensors: all good.

    6. I've checked all fuses in all fuse boxes and found that they are good.

    7. I have all 3 immobilizer remotes for this car: 2 black, 1 red. All have new batteries and function correctly. Arming and disarming the system appears to function normally. The battery in the siren is dead. Upon disarming, I get 2 chirps accompanied by flashing lights.

    8. I was able to verify camshaft timing using the crank pulley tooth gap and the lobe at the camshaft phase sensor and it's good(close enough to start).

    9. The F1 gearbox pump operates and will shift from N to 1 and R with the key on. I've made sure that I have good F1 pressure and the gearbox knows its in Neutral.

My assumption is that I have a faulty immobilizer system. Somehow, I suspect it's not giving the go-ahead to the DME. I've hit a roadblock as I don't really have a proper wiring diagram for the car. 1999 355 F1 ME 5.2 diagrams are hard to find, apparently. I heard/read of Diagnostic Sheets that exist for these cars that aren't found in the Workshop Manual. The dealership is booked out for several weeks and, call me a martyr, I really want to fix this car. If anyone out there knows where I can obtain diagnostic guides for the vehicle or can supply a wiring diagram for a '99 355 F1 Spider- let me know. I am willing to pay.

Try a new battery. It's possible that you have low battery voltage. The immobilizer is also a possibility.

    Where are you located?

What is the red light on the dash (between the center air vents) doing when you think the immobilizer has been disarmed?

You may find other helpful manuals at ferraridatabase.com

I know this sounds daft but often issues like this in the first few days of ownership are simpler than serious (hence posts 3 & 4 for example)

Thank you for the replies! :)

I have not tried starting the engine after entering the Security Code. There is some confusion on the exact sequence of entering the number and I don't have any backup documentation on that process.

This isn't a battery or voltage problem; of that I am certain.

The red light turns on/solid when I disarm the immobilizer.

I have scoured Ferrari Database. There are no DME troubleshooting guides or diagnostic plans found there.

    I'm in Austin, TX.

Update: there was a bad pin connection inside one of the F1 system plug connectors. Due to this fault, the F1 system was not giving the go-ahead to the Motronic ECU to start the engine. The pin inside the connector was replaced and the engine started right up. She's back on the road and runs like a champ!
