I think redline on that car is 8500 rpm, true?

Also, as I remember, that generation of F1 will automatically upshift when it hits near 8500 rpm. I assume it is not automatically upshifting either?

Can you be more specific? Is it back firing or just shutting off?

Mine never automatically upshifted but had a rev limiter that cut the gas at 8500 RPM

Sounds like a fuel volume or pressure issue.
Maybe could be related to Air Fuel ratio and if mass air flow sensor is messed up then this could be signaling engine to cut fuel. I dunno. Had a similar issue in my porsche and it was mass air flow sensor and fuel pressure regulator..

Just in case it might help, I had what sounds like the exact same problem only on a different car, a 2001 Toyota MR2 Spyder.

At around 5000 RPM (redline is 6500) the power would just "cut out", kind of like hitting the rev limiter. In my case it turned out to be a faulty MAF sensor. Replaced it myself and everything was perfect again, however in my case the CEL was on and the 2 OBD-II codes reported were something like "P0171 is System Bank 1 Lean, P0174 is System Bank 2 lean" if I recall correctly.

I had an almost identical problem (i.e. similar OBD-II codes) on a 1998 Boxster only without the power "cut out" behavior and replacing the MAF sensor solved the issue there too. I would also mention that in the former instance (the MR2) I first tried cleaning the MAF which did not work, so my assumption going forward is that these MAF sensors eventually just fail at some point and replacing them is the easiest way to go. I've heard too that some people have suspected that using K&N filters might corrupt MAF sensors (it's the oil presumably), but in my case I was not using K&N at the time, however I am now and have had not problems.

Also, FWIW I was getting similar codes (apologies for not having the specifics) on my 1999 360 when I first bought it, but when I brought it to Damian for its first annual (yes, another endorsement for Damian at Fusion Motorsports) he mentioned tightening one or more bolts on the exhaust and I think I may have seen the CEL a couple of times since then but it's now been over 3 years without one instance, so while I can't speak directly to replacing the MAF on the 360, it is the first thing I would try given similar symptoms.

Try the MAF cleaner first, before spending $$$ on new MAF sensors...
