Hi everyone. My name is Bryon. I'm new to the site and love it. Im pretty active on the NSX forum and hope to contribute here. I've been searching for a Ferrari for about a year. I have narrowed my model to a 360 or 355, spider. I prefer manual, and red or yellow ext. I can spend up to $85,000 cash.
The car in question is offered by the Toy Barn in Dublin Ohio. It's 1997 red 355 spider, manual with 16,000 miles, mint condition, with tons of dealer history. See link.

    http://www.toybarncars.com/dublin-used-1997-ferrari-f355-spider-vid66296604-5020a

The VIN#ZFFXR48A0V0107549. Does anyone have any info on this car? The car has show winning history I'm curious about. Nothing shows up on a VIN search here or on google. Car fax is clean and gives many clues about service at MAG.

I would like to contact the previous owner. I would also like as much feedback from F chatters about their price opinion, as well as, deciding on a 355 over the 360. If anyone has had experience with the Toy Barn I would like to hear your experience. The reason I chose the 355 is because its red, manual, serviced, spider and local. I've found 360s that meet my criteria but are usually in Florida or Califrornia. Im not opposed to travel for the right car but it sure is nice to get one local.

Thanks in advance for all your comments. I look forward to my first ownership experience! It is a wonderful feeling to know my hard work has finally paid off to achieve my life long dream of owning a Ferrari.

    Bryon

Hi Byron, welcome to FerrariChat. :)

I'm not yet a Ferrari owner myself, but I must say that seems a strange way to choose a 355 over a 360. It seems to me that really this should be a decision based on which car really sets your passions alight rather than which car happens to be local. I could understand the local mentality on a daily driver, but for a Ferrari... I'd go that little bit further, expand the search, and think of the transport as worth it for getting precisely the right Ferrari.

Having said that, the 355 is a fine car. I just can't personally help with any specifics on that one. Good luck! :D

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Agree with above comment. I bought a 2001 360 spider F1 with 4200 miles for $85,500, plus tax of course, however, if you want a manual transmission, you should be able to get one in your price range. Be patient, and you will also be able to find one with Scuderia Fender shields, a must.

Byron, I to am a NSX owner looking into getting another Ferrari. I have a slightly higher budget than you and I am looking at a 360 or F430. I have ruled out the 355 due to its much higher maintenance costs. The every 3 year cam belt replacement in the 355 is an engine out ordeal. Search the forum for costs, could be $5k. Others with more knowledge will chime in. Be fully aware that any Ferrari is much more expensive to operate and maintain then the NSX. I will be keeping the NSX irregardless of what car I end up with. Performance wise the 355 is about equal to the NSX. The 360 is a big step up from the 355.

    good luck

Couldn't disagree more. The 355 is a much sweeter car to look at , drive and listen to then a 360. Having owned my 355 when I bought a 360 (and 430 for that matter) I found myself driving the 355 much more. Drive them both and look at them from all angles . I think you will find that a well sorted 355 can be very reliable and no more costly to maintain then a 360.

Hi Byron, I sat in that 355 at the Toy Barn, I think the price is right on! The car is stunning. I love the 355 engine, the sound and construction is very unique. The car fit me very well and I wish I could grab it. Good luck!

The Toy Barn has an excellent reputation. The 355 is spotless.

I love the 355 but I would not buy one over a 360 bc of increased maintenance costs.

Take your time and you will find the right car. 360 manual transm cars are out there, but you have to be patient. Don't be afraid to travel to get the car that you really want.

360 buddy, I have a 355 and the maintenance is more and also there is far more maintenance then the 360, 360 is more of a daily.

Another thing to there is far more parts for the 360 aftermarket available. The 355 parts are hard to find.

355 is awesome but just does not compare in performance and pure fun. 355 is a lot more of a headache too, my top never works right!

Wow. Thanks for all the heads up. Thats exactly the info I was after. I believe I'm convinced on going the 360 route. I think I was settling for an easier purchace, but not the model I would have been happy with.

    I also found a this:
    http://ferrarichat.com/forum/vbclassified.php?do=ad&id=5088

We negotiated a great price but havent seen a single service record. I'm very concerned about the color combo. Perhaps another example of me settling on a less then ideal car.

malebomb01--Thats some good internet sluthing! My friend, I owe you an expensive drink. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

BTW, I would not recommend dealing with Matt from the Toy Barn. His salesmanship skills make it difficult for a no B.S. approach to buying a car.

    Thanks for everyones input.

    Shazam!!

Anxpert- From a performance standpoint, which one is funner to drive? Which one do you think will hold its value better?

Blampee & VVR- I was also shocked at the NSX being not much different then a 355. VVR, I would like to hear more about their simularities and differences, in your opinion.

Malebomb01- Do you have access to buying auctioned Ferraris? Would you suggest it to be a good idea? (With due diligence.) I heard Nashville has a once a month auction. I'm from Cincinnati, thats not too far for me to travel for a purchase. My guess is its not a public auction. Anyway, if you answered yes to above questions, I would like to take 5 minutes of your time for a phone call. 513-519-3585.

P.S. Toy Barn states their 355 came from a private owner named "John". The car had vanity plates and car fax showed KY registration. It was recently in a car show with an Itianian catagory, which it won, in central Ohio. If anyone knows the previous owner, I would like to talk to him or her about their passionate ownership.

    Thanks again FerrariChat!

OK .... the 360 is more spacious a bit more power and a bit newer look, nevertheless while the 360 may have more power, I feel more attached tho the 355.

Both cars have Tubis, but the sound of the 355 is significantly better and a bit better mannered at low speeds.

Both cars are running on 19" wheels and again the 355 is more comfortable for every day driving.

If you are seeking all out performance ... the 360 if you are looking for a great balance the 355 .... I was looking at the 360 CS, but was fortunate enough to keep 2 vs 1.

BY THE WAY...... don't worry about the re-sale value ...... start it up, put it in gear and ...... D R I V E !

I know way too many F owners / drivers that are so concerned about milage an re-sale value that they forget about the reason they bought the car to begin with !

When deciding to buy the cars, I have a 10K reserve for un-expected XY & Z's, regardless of how well a car has been serviced or kept ..... things do go wrong.

Better to have an " acceptable " car and a reserve than having a " perfect " car purchased at your maximum budget .....just my opinion.

    Best of Luck

    John Lilak's car, perhaps?

His car won 3rd place in the 2007 Italian Gathering show, as you can see at the listings on this page:

    http://www.evansauto.com/ig2007/ig2007pics.html

Don't know John personally, but perhaps someone here does?

You can always post a question in the Ohio section.

Well I dont know how to start this reply! I am new to Ferraris and to this site as of today! I just purchased the 355 that is posted in this site. I drove it today and went through it very carefully. I found Justin at the Toy Barn to be very helpful and patient with me as I start my adventure in exotics! I have researched the hell out the 360-355 debate and came to the decision that with my budget, the style I like and location this car was the one for me to "start" with. I believe the price that i finally negotiated was fair and I am looking forward to enjoying my first Ferrari. I am very nervous of the on going repairs but the care and documentation of service on this car has set me alittle at ease!

Bryon, what were your thoughts on the car - obviously you have seen her up close. Did you drive it? I dont know that much about the Toy Barn but they treated me fairly and I have not found any negative comments online???
Thanks to all and my eyes will be bleeding tonight as I research some more!
    Chris in KY

The car has had 2 owners, a dr in Lexington, KY and then John in OH who appears to be as anal as anyone I know of.

    Hammer1 and bryonj,

Don't let the cost of the 30K major service scare you. 355s are selling about $30-$40K cheaper than 360s. That means you can pay for 3 to 4 top class Major services on a 355 for the difference in price and still have money left over for intermediate repairs.

Either way, both are great cars. Drive and enjoy!
