I have just had a bare 2.4 liter block weighed it is 111.5 lbs (with the bearing caps on). Anyone know what the 2.0 liter block weighs?

With or without the head studs? I'll get one weighed.

Michael's block is currently without head studs.

206 block with liners - head studs, but + most other studs & + 2 chain idler bearings = 23.78kg
I estimate that without the studs & bearings it would be 23kg = 50.7lbs
    a saving of 27.6kg = 60.8lbs

Also remember the cam covers are 1.6kg = 3.4lbs lighter

    Total saving 29.2kg = 64.4lbs

Thanks! Why are the cam covers lighter in the 2.0? M

    They're magnesium alloy.
See the current thread 'Dino cam cover color'

That is a huge weight saving. More than 50%! I didn't expect the difference would be as great. Lotus Elan (cast iron) blocks are now being reproduced in aluminum, but the weight saving is marginal, so this is quite a surprise.

Note this is a 2.0 in alloy vs a 2.4 in cast iron, but even the type of alloy matters as the cam cover weight differences attest. However, in a 2500 pound road car, an extra 50 pounds is hardly noticed, other than fore and aft balance, M

If you ever get a chance to drive a FIAT Dino 2.0 spider, you will see that it is quite different from your 2.4 FIAT Dino, at least at parking lot speeds anyway.

Its all due to the extra weight of the 2.4 block.

Not sure you can tell the difference between 206 and 246 Ferrari Dino since the engine weight is not on the front wheels.

That's substantially more than a BMW V12 which weighs about 75.

mikeyr: I have often heard that, I wish your 2.0 was on this coast or mine yours for a side by side drive, I just did one of those with my 365GTC4 and friend's 365GTB4, it was a very interesting comparison for both of us, we each learned something about our cars and frankly were both surprised about certain aspects of the other's! Who has a 2.0 Spider near to DC? I will host the event! M

Can you post something about your 365 side by side experiences?
    Thanks
