I live in Scottsdale and have been going to the Barrett out here for 15 years. What I have noticed is that with Craig Jackson's transition from true exotics to muscle cars, the bidders seem more inclined to buy exotics above market value. I think this has a lot to do with the namesake of these cars. It seems very impressive to see a "Ferrari" in a mass of Potiacs, Fords and Chevrolets.

I think that the transformation, as well as the "no reserve" policy of the Barrett that is ruining the auction. This year, the RM and the Russo and Steele which are held the same weekend pulled the true "exotics" and were truly a sight to be seen. The no reserve policy would make any seller (as well as the 8% sellers premium) run from this auction. It's sad. Because this was one of the highlights of my year, getting a bidders pass and spending 4-5 days at the auction and enjoy hanging with true car enthusiasts. Now it is more like a circus with "spectators" coming to party and shoulder rub with the rich and famous.

I bought a Porsche 356a last year at the auction, simply because the bidding was stopping at 70% of the market value. So I got a steal. But it makes me ill to see the glory of this event going to hell because it has become such a money making machine. Jackson even went as far as starting the Barrett-Jackson Vegas this year as leverage for the City of Scottsdale to sell him Westwold, the site which the event is held.

For any of you who actually come to the Barrett, I'm sure you will agree with me that it should now be called the BJ Circus. I'm sure you all saw the fire breathing robotron that sold for $600,000. Thanks Craig, for ruining the legacy that your father built and turning it into a sideshow...just my opinion.

No reserve policy is an easy one for the auction company. No reserve items does not matter if it's art or cars tend on average to sell for 10% to 15% higher. Also the no sale rate is lower. The auction company makes more money on this. Owners tend to have unrealistic ideas on the value of thier items. Look at the recent housing market with the disconnect between buyers and sellers.

RM and Russo and Steel are much better run orginasations and give much better customer service than BJ IMHO.

All of them have a "circus-like" atmosphere where you have no control over the outcome and hear less truth spoken than a political debate.

I've been to several and it took a long time to wash the stink off.

I would never take a car to auction unless I had bought it cheap.

Buying a car at an auction is not the way to go. Years ago I bought a flat rad Morgan at an auction in FL. Car sold real cheap ($4,000) and the owner did not want to surrender the car which he was required by law to. As soon as the hammer falls it's my car and I paid cash for the car to the auction company. Had to get the cops to remove the owner from the car. Fun Fun Fun
