I just met Jean Todt last night. He was visiting one of the dealership to celebrate Ferrari's drivers and constructor championship. I asked him what is happening with engine rules in F1 for 2006. He said they are going to the 2.4 liter V8. I asked him if it would change the sound of the F1 cars. He said no, they would sound the same. In my opinion, the sound of F1 cars today are unbelievable and I would guess it is due to the V10 3 liter motors and reving at 19,000. I would think changing the motor 2.4 liter V8 would make them sound more like champ cars, which sounds like crap. What do you guys think?

    Welcome to F-chat!

Where were you when you met Jean Todt? Personally I think it will be different - and I will not like it as much as the v10. Just as I like a flat 12 at 12,000 better than a v10 at 19,000 - yeah buddy!

I met him at the Ferrari dealership in Beverly Hills last night. They had party for all their ferrari customers, to meet and celebrate Ferrari's drivers and constructor championship with Jean Todt.

What our ears hear has nothing to do with the number of cylinders (almost ;)), but simply the number of pulses, combustion processes.

Thus the reason Champ cars sound not as good is because they simply do not rev as high.

Thus never fear mate, a v8 F1 engine will not sound the much different to a v10 at 19000 rpm (19000 x 5 = 95000 ignitions per minute ... compared to 19000 x 4 = 76000). They will still scream ... and give it a year or 2 and the revs will build and then when the 2.4 v8 is revving to 23750 rpm they will sound exactly the same! ... and WOW even more amazing.

Standing still in F1 is just wrong ... change is required to push the boundaries.

This is great news for Ferrari's road cars. Now the entry-level V-8s will be based even more closely on their F1 big brothers. Plus, all the testing of V-8s will invariably push the RPM envelope on the street cars, especially the 8s.

Can you say 10,000 redline? Indeed.
