A friend of mine has a '93 512 TR which has 2 batteries installed in it; one in each compartment near the headlights. Is this right? I've never seen a car with 2 full-sized batteries like this. He says that the car came this way . He's the second owner.

I don't know specifically about the TR but some very high compression vehicles, especially diesels use two batteries in parallel to increase current to the starter. It would not suprise me to see this.

im not really an expert on TRs but i do know that if there is a high powered stereo system in some cars it can require a secondary battery.

92 512 with just one battery. I wouldn't be suprised if this was done on some cars, maybe and option. Porsche used to do this a lot trying to compensate for all the weight hanging off the back end, some were 2 six volt and others were 2 12 volt. The difference being wired in parallel vs. wired in series.
