    Hi,

    Service 308 GT4:

I'm the owner of a 328 and am used to service it myself. But recently a friend asked me to service his 308 GT4. Someone told me there is a difference between the cambelts.

Please explain the difference between a 2-valve and 4-valve cambelt, if there is any.
What to keep in mind on ordering parts to service a 308 GT4 compaired to the 328?
Are the camcovergaskets, distributorseals/gaskets the same on 308's?

    Thanks in advance!

Every item you mention is different from the 308 4V compared to the 308 2V "i", and they are only one "generation" apart, so I would say it's a safe bet to assume that 328 / 308GT4 will also be fully different in those regards.

Actually, I need to correct my above statements....

Apparently, the cam shaft oil seals have been standardized in the aftermarket parts supply base, and the same seal is now used across the entire 308 and 328 range --- even the same for the 288 and some V12 models as well...

    Thanks guys!

Steve, I'm not sure but think the car is 1977.

I have done it on both cars and the 328 belts are shorter than the GT4 belts. but, ... there is more room in the GT4 to work. You may need to undo the engine mounts and jack up the engine in order to turn, maneuver, and finally remove the rear timing belt cover on the GT4. But, you do not need to remove the rear deck to do the valve adjust in the front.

I still have a stack of 2V valve shims of various thicknesses and I will send them to you free of charge, on ONE condition.

    1. You MUST send them to the next person with all your left over shims FREE OF CHARGE for the asking, and so on and so on.

I am hoping that this tradition sticks.

Version (US or Euro) will be somewhat important too -- if it is a 1977 US version you can download a copy of the 161/78 '78-'79 US 308GTB/S SPC here:

    http://ferrari.cdyn.com/

which I think should be OK for the usually serviced parts on a 1977 US 308 engine.

If it is a 1977 Euro version, you can access the Euro 308 SPC at:

    www.ricambiamerica.com or www.eurospares.co.uk

I like that idea. I have some 4 valve shims I'd be happy to put into such a "pool".

Mitchell and Steve, this is very helpfull. Thanks!
When the car arrives I will let you know and join the pool. Good idea!
Have about 10 4-valve shims waiting.
Maybe we can add a thread only for this. Easy to find and e-mail for request.
